perhaps on purpose. Still, it ends a bit more through a whimpter than a bang (perhaps, again, on purpose), but the possible discussions about what was real and what was not still abound, which is half the fun for unreliable narrators. I liked it enough to eventually try out one of his later books.

which should prompt a double take from a more absent minded reader. It still ends kind of a sudden, with the fate of some characters (like Jiro) and what others must represent (like the cousin/uncle) unclear. It still kind of feels like the big inciting incident was completely brushed over, (2/3)

A bit yes. For a short while probably not too bad, but any new known exploit will be a neon sign to be used.
