Dude, it's probably the hardest part! I've been absent for like... a whole dang month at this point!
I'm a lurker by nature, keep to myself, but the effort has to be made if growing is what you want to do. Gotta remember that all the lame stuff you have to do is set up for the fun stuff! :D

I know you're meming, but I don't really think there's anything inherently wrong with wanting to be popular and pursuing that. In reality those people probably have the common denominator of being really good at marketing

The best way to do this isn't actually to be yourself, ironically enough given all the advice, it's to constantly be a better you than you were before.

Given there is no single path to "popularity" it becomes more important for you to decide on what YOU want to be known for and then get good enough at said thing for others to remember you for it.
This doesn't mean you have to be top tier, but to be known you have to be memorable. Simply how it is.

The reality of the situation is popularity is simply public approval, and the only way to get that is to do something the public takes interest in. Problem with that is the public is not a monolith and so different actions will attract varying slices of the overall group.

That being said, over iterating can definitely make your stuff look worse. It's essentially a larger scale version of when the sketch looks better than the line art. You end up tightening up too much
