I'm not sure whether it qualifies, but 'Justice league' is certainly one of the most recent examples of a rather turmultuous production that ended up under performing.

I bought my first comic in 2003. It was The Incredible hulk #72, I liked the artwork so I bought it - not realizing that it was part of a larger arc lol. If I were to recommend a comic, I'd explain these aspects of comics first - story arcs etc. And ask if the person liked the artwork.
