If we don't transition the planet will do it for us and limit the population to a sustainable level. Humans are like a virus and planet has a fever. I hope we are Intelligent enough to transition to a sustainable future although I won't be around to see that .

Agree. Labour need to show that things are better by 2029 including electricity prices for those on standard tariffs who can't or won't embrace WVs, batteries, solar etc. The link with fossil fuels keeps prices higher than necessary and a reduction would be like a tax cut.

If people think things are bad now just vote in deform and see what happens. It won't end well .

So we burn all the oil in north sea then what ? It would be far more sensible to preserve as much oil as possible for use of future generations and eek it out for as long as possible not waste it on combustion. Tories and Reform seem hell bent on short term rather than future of our grandkids.

Be careful what you wish for 🫣

The government's REMA process has pulled back from zonal pricing and seems to say prices for consumers will reduce from better spacial planning. Unless they reduce the spark gap soon consumers will see no change and by extension the electorate.

That's why you run them low and slow so they maintain a steady temperature. If you setback too much it does take a while to recover and it is less efficient to boost from cold too often. I would recommend a heat pump based on my experience over last three years of ownership.

We installed ours in June 22. During December 22 house was too warm at settings done by octopus energy 50⁰c@-2⁰c/35⁰c@18c and got complaints. We now run at 42⁰c@-3⁰c/32⁰c@10⁰c and nice even temps .

Luddites. Doubling down on past in a global disruption when we should be embracing the future is not a good idea.

4 bed 1990s detachex house with db glazing, loft/ cavity insulation. Heat loss 6.6kW@-2⁰c. Octopus installed 7kW ASHP, 11/14 rads and new 210l sealed cylinder. £6k after £5k grant so £3.5k today. EV and solar (4.28kWp system but no battery). Here are my last 12 mth energy usage.

Wow a positive story in the media ..... What's going on 😉

Agree it's Enough to make you 🤮

That assumes electricity on price cap rather than time of use tariffs which are cheaper and sCOP of 3 is very low. Even at cap prices approx cost of energy gas = 6.34/0.9 = 7.04p/kWh. So need sCOP > 24.86/7.04 = 3.53 to save (plus no gas SC) . I do agree spark gap needs to be lowered.

Wouldn't it be nice if the BBC tried to educate the public in a non biased way about heat pumps. Can't see anything you have said on the podcast is "controversial". Thank you for you efforts.

My house is a 1990s detached. I have double glazing, loft insulation /cavity wall insulation installed. Not super insulated and got the grant. Agree don't need super insulation to install ashp . It will be bigger than needed as a trade off between insulation and heat reqd irrespective of source.
April 19, 2025 at 8:08 AM
In UK electricity is 24.86p/kWh and 60.97p/day. Gas is 6.34p/kWh and 31.6p/day. Assuming 90% efficient gas unit cost of heat with gas is 7.04p/kWh. Need an sCOP > 24.86/7.04=3.53 to break even although would save £115/year on standing charge.
April 15, 2025 at 6:28 AM
The government needs to stop this nonsense asap.
April 11, 2025 at 2:52 PM
What flow temperatures do you design to ? With weather compensation should get higher than 2 . Insulation isn't relevant to sCOP is it although it is relevant to the energy demand .
April 10, 2025 at 5:09 PM
Must take a lot of effort to get that low !!!
April 10, 2025 at 5:04 PM
Costs are much the same without solar. I have solar (no battery) and heat/ DHW costs £623/yr at Octopus rates. Gas cost £1050 @ cap prices. Savings £427/yr. The gov needs reform the electric market in a way that dual fuel users get no price increase but ASHP users save more to increase take up
April 10, 2025 at 5:03 PM
My overall energy bills for electricity including an EV and heat pump are about £87/month (current rates). In 2019 before prices nearly doubled I was paying £82/month for gas and electric plus about £90/mth for petrol (current prices) . I have solar but no battery.

Same here.

Perhaps talk to people who actually have one or try visiting a property with one through organisations like this www.visitaheatpump.com

They are still being developed but coming for sure. First uses will be to displace factory workers no doubt .
