The great William Blake was born on this day in 1757. I got lucky at O level English studying Songs of Innocence and Experience with a brilliant teacher.

I hadn’t heard of this but the Much Better Half recommended it. Apparently it’s a big favourite of Larry David’s and I can see why. Wry, sly and genuinely funny in a way that so many ‘funny’ novels really aren’t. So to continue the chain: LD -> MBH -> me -> you. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

This is a great first novel and well summarised by those front-cover testimonies. It features an ‘outspoken’ fading rock singer and I wouldn’t want to speculate about who that’s based on but I suppose there might be a clue in the title. Seriously though it’s well worth reading 👍🏼

I actually read this because Felt/Denim non-hitmaker Lawrence said it’s the best book he’s read this century. I rarely read true crime but I have to say this (updated 2023 edition) was every bit as gripping and human as those twin peaks of the genre In Cold Blood and The Executioner’s Song.

The Rosehips, 1986. Ant in the middle here left this world 15 years ago today. Fondly remembered, much missed but still with us all in so many small ways. Now playing one of the Husker Du records we used to enjoy together.

A very minor irritant in the scheme of things but I do wish they’d thought a bit more about this pub sign down the road. Locals are a sub-group of pubs so ‘pub & local’ makes no sense. I suppose I should be grateful I haven’t got anything important to worry about.

The Much Better Half has been advising me to read this for about 35 years so as I’m always one to do what I’m told I’ve spent this week doing just that. A right riveting gothic page-turner it is as well. Should have read it 34 and a half years ago.
