The 3rd reading of the Fast-track Approvals Bill is tomorrow after question time. Unless a few brave government MPs cross the floor for the sake of nature, Te Tiriti, community and democracy, it’ll be passed by dinnertime. 😞😞😞

A picture paints 1000 words.
Do you want to know what a loss of hope looks like? This is the percentage increase in the number of people migrating away from NZ since the election. The 131,100 migrant departures in the October 2024 year are, provisionally, the highest on record for an annual period

One of the many quirks of parliament is that sometimes time stands still. The house went into urgency on Tuesday, 10 Dec. That means that the house stays stuck on that day until urgency is lifted. Right now it’s Thursday night, 12 Dec for the rest of New Zealand, except for us here in parliament.

Yesterday, Camilla Belich and I were in Tokoroa, meeting with workers and community members who face uncertainty if the Oji Kinleith Mill scales back, putting 230 jobs at risk. This would be a huge blow to the community and devastating for Tokoroa.

Scrutiny Week in Parliament is an important time for MPs to question, examine, and hold government ministers accountable. Let’s hope it brings some clear and meaningful answers as the week unfolds.

What people said at Seymour’s public meeting in New Plymouth this week … Ngāmotu, we’re better than this. These voices represent a bygone era, not who we are today. I’m heartened to see that the voices of unity and our shared future are louder and stronger, drowning out this hate.
