Per the NYTimes, a Disciples of Christ pastor confronted agents (presumably ICE) in front of her church as they detained a man.

When the pastor shouted instructions in Spanish at the man as he was detained, an agent pointed a gun at her.

Then, they laughed.

The God we thought we left behind, abandoned, has come hurling toward this refugee camp to be with us.

The God of peace has come to us in war-torn exile.

The God of indescribable holy bizarre beauty has come to this muddy ditch to find us.

Holy shit and hallelujah.

Claiming that America is a “Christian nation“ while actively creating legislation that directly harms the very people Jesus called us to serve—namely the poor, the sick, the hungry, the immigrant, and the marginalized—is the height of both religious and political hypocrisy.

Universities admitted these international students. Unless they are guilty of some pretty serious misconduct, those universities have a moral duty to speak up for them.

All I heard growing up was it wasn’t the government’s job to care for the poor. It was the church’s.

Well, bluff called. Get ready to sell your stuff.

There’s about to be a lot more hungry people.

A lot more people w/out housing.

A lot more people w/out healthcare.

We have tended to undervalue & misunderstand lament.
Modern worship represents this failure to lament corporately & liturgically. This leaves us without a robust practice of lament.

Is “Christ the King” outdated, authoritarian, patriarchal theology? Nope. It’s the opposite. King Jesus undermines the authoritarian & the patriarchal. King Jesus washes his disciples’ feet & teaches us not to Lord it over others, as the Gentiles do.

Lord of the nations, you see us from on high as we enter an unprecedented era. Surely you will not let the American experiment become something hateful? We cannot know your plans but we know your Son and his unconquerable love. Let us see others as He sees them.

Remember, the road to the empty tomb passed through authoritarian regimes, power hungry politicians, religious hypocrisy and complicity with state sanctioned violence, cruelty, and seemingly shattered dreams….

But the midnight of earth’s cruelties could not stop heaven’s dawn from coming.
