Laemmle hiring cousins - just remember that the only reason I know how to pronounce his name is from reading that some wag apparently commented "Carl Laemmle has a very large family"

I love the series, but I love the spy & the American books slightly less than the rest.

Langston Hughes? The one of his I always remember is:

"The rhythm of life is a jazz rhythm, honey
"And the gods are laughing at us"

Did either of those films have some kind of 'in theatre' sound accompaniment, eg phonographs playing the arias sung in the film?

Omg, Robert Carlyle pre Trainspotting. Quite a contrast, to say the least 😄

Are they heated in the oven? That picture makes them look weirdly like long sausage rolls

Allegedly 'the youth' have some trouble reading cursive, as it's not always taught any more. I didn't believe it until I remembered the trouble I have reading old family letters, & thought 'fair enough'.

I write by hand every day, mostly planning stuff. I use a notebook to make notes of what I do every day for work. The writing is a bit of a scrawl, a hybrid of print & cursive: joined-up print rather than proper cursive

I'm occasionally surprised by exactly which parts of the NCFOM ending people find ambiguous. Seriously, if they don't know what happened to Kelly McDonald's character ...

Her father, when Kirke speaks to him: "well, duh, I could tell"

I loved the way both Kirke & Lorcan take such obvious delight in the FMC's intelligence and quick wit in their books.

Be right back, off to copyright 'curry'

This is just delightful. There was an extremely shaggy French sheepdog (if I guessed the Dutch words correctly) which I just wanted to floof

There's a channel here which repeats some UK cop shows a lot, so I think I've seen every episode of Frost, Morse & Lewis about 3 times over the past years. Similar for Midsomer Murders, although it has a lot more episodes so takes longer to repeat
December 4, 2025 at 4:33 AM
Which British shows have you seen in their entirety?
December 4, 2025 at 2:23 AM
I looked up Enchanted Cottage, & the heroine is apparently a 'homely' woman - played by the very unplain May McAvoy 🤣

Reminds me of watching the Jane Eyre miniseries, Rochester moaning, 'I'm an ugly man'. Sir, you're Toby Stephens, get real.

I'm undecided between the fried chicken & the barbecue plate.

That t-bone steak is pricier than I expected.

Also, no pie for dessert??

Same. Fork left, knife right if it needs cutting eg steak. Fork right, no knife if it's something like spaghetti

Without checking, I think that might be Thorpe himself? He really was one of those remarkable multi-talented people, in the days before narrow specialisation took over completely
December 3, 2025 at 1:56 AM
Which book is this that a show was made from?

The only problem with a recipe which starts by asking for 400 g chocolate is not giving in to the immediate gratification of eating the chocolate before I even start 😳

Does she ask everyone for pets? I petted an unknown GR on my way home from the supermarket yesterday because he leaned in my direction with a hopeful expression.
