China, PLA, Taiwan, defense, & nukes | Liberal natsec-type | Opinions mine
Bet ya nuclear missiles could get close and destroy quicker and, well, more destructively than a CAB :) What a time to be alive

Well... I mean, technically...

Anyways, I'm sure those with far better Chinese than I (low bar) could provide interesting context on the linguistics in the context of the historic roots of all this with the PLA as it was under Mao and all that fun, but alas.

(I should have more accurately said "sea" instead of "water" here but you get the point)

Not to mention it was the Second Artillery until 2015, which elevated it to its own service as the PLARF, not turning it into being part of the Army :)

While Navy is 海军,or literally "water army", Air Force is 空军,or literally "air army", Rocket Force is 火箭军 or literally "Rocket Army" etc. etc. Just stick PLA (解放军) in front of em and voila, they're the Party's version.

Yep, honestly its just a translation thing. 解放军 could maybe more literally be "People's Liberation Military" in the naming context. All of the branches start with that then have the actual service type after, so the actual army is 解放军陆军,so 解放军 People's Liberation Army, 陆军 Ground Army.

I miss Seattle. Still has a lot to go, but have loved seeing those changes over the last several years (conveniently after I no longer live there...).

Now we just need my field to exist there 🙃

Gerald C. Brown examines the future trajectory of China’s #nuclear force as it shifts to a “world-class” #nuclearforce, including drivers, political objectives, employment, and capability developments in his chapter from the new book in NBR's PLA series.

He... does not recognize that whether you work or not during the shutdown is not a choice of the employee? It is literally illegal to do any work unless you get exempted, whether you want to work for free or not... I can't even check my email except for when I get pulled back in and exempted.

It's very interesting seeing some folks turning from "all work should be paid and workers should expect fair compensation for said work" to "federal workers should just continue to work and do so without pay indefinitely or they're the problem."

Reading your posts just makes me recognize I can't afford to exist

Wanna counter Chinese nuclear expansion? Zoom out--dispersable conventional forces throughout the FIC, mobile missiles, and the support functions to move and sustain.

Damn right

State's actions ultimately can't just be explained by a single IR theoretical framework across the board, no one should be "a realist" or "a constructivist".

Yes, we absolutely should be working to counter the threats posed by Beijing and seeking to deter or defeat PRC military action. We also should be seeking to promote democracy and free trade and secure the obvious benefits posed by stronger liberal norms.
