I'm looking forward to a few years from now when things have stabilized a bit.

I do not think AI will have taken over the world like we are being made to fear/believe, but the llms will have found some niches that makes sense.

It's frustrating because we are being fed a bunch of frantic propaganda from the AI industry (who need fuel for their -- frankly unsustainable -- funding model) but any proper studies on the use of these things will take actual time to do.

(I'm thinking of that recent study for instance that showed coders thought using LLMs made them more efficient when it actually made them slower, or something like that)

One concern here is that people's perception of these systems' usefulness isn't necessarily a reliable indicator of whether they are actually useful. This might be in part because of how all the human response training making the user experience smooth.

I think that's exactly right.

Man, I know the term "Orwellian" has been horrendously misused over the years, but, like, *gestures wildly at the obvious*

I love how each cat has chosen the blanket that camouflages them best.

For stuff like this, I just make myself wait 24 hrs and only post if it still seems worthwhile (which is almost never).

You might therefore conclude that large groups rarely if ever have genuine group intentions.

But of course it could also be that large group intentions just have a different structure than small group intentions.

I would not say there is a consensus on the answer here.
October 3, 2025 at 3:25 PM
Cases of intentionality in large groups are where things get trickier. Here we have to look at factors such as how highly structured the group is.

Theories of collective intentionality that work well for small groups (e.g Bratman's) are difficult to "scale up" to large groups.
October 3, 2025 at 3:25 PM
I think the answer here depends on what you mean by "difficult to have" and what kind of group you're talking about. Certain kinds of collective intention are quite pervasive, and part of the challenge for theorists is explaining both how they are both efficacious and relatively easy to achieve.

In the 2010s I watched all those experimental reality shows where people competed in doing their weirdo crafts. They only ever lasted 1 season max, and I often suspected I was their only viewer.

I can listen endlessly to anyone with expertise talk about their topic or craft, even if I don't find it intrinsically interesting. Heck, I enjoy it even if I actively dislike their thing. Like, I watched Top Gear for a while, and I vehemently *hate* cars. I'm just a sucker for an infodump!

Yeah that would have been 🔥🔥

(I was basing my guess here on things I read during the last Trump Royal visit about Charles' motivations. Not entirely sure if they're [still] accurate.)

The Nazis did plenty of petty and farcical things, they've just mostly been forgotten. For instance, they changed the spelling alphabet to remove Jewish sounding names -- a change only reverted in 2020.

Fascism is about controlling all aspects of life, including the seemingly trivial.
Germany to wipe Nazi traces from phonetic alphabet
The Nazis removed Jewish names from the German phonetic alphabet - now a reform is coming.

I believe Charles is under the delusion that he can somehow harness Trump's obsession with the Royals to influence him in important ways (this will work no better for him than anyone else, of course).

This is very relatable.

Yes. And one reason that it is important to be clear about these facts is that pressure now needs to be applied to Parliament to actually do this work.
April 17, 2025 at 2:55 PM
Thanks for sharing. I thought the reporting on this was, as so often the case when trans rights are the topic, misleading and disingenuous. This ruling is obviously bad but it is also much narrower in scope than its advocates would have us believe. And it *can* be remedied by parliament.

And it was unanimous too 😔
