The relief authorities here undoubtedly are fcusy. They are so busy throwing out life-belts, it seems to me, that they have no time to summon the rescue ships. There is every disposition to keep the sinking ship afloat but nothing much, seemingly is being done about getting him to shore. Throughout Fayette, a county which never has concerned itself very much about the under dog, one encounters the view that the said under dog is just flotsam by nature. Of course, he should have work for which he is fitted —that means grubbing coal underground — but he should not be counted in on any fanciful re-habilitation scheme predicated upon self-help. He simply will not fit in— he's a miner by nature and nothing but mining at good pay will satisfy him. That's the thesis so far as the mine is concerned and few consider any other type as a real problem. And, as for him, well not much can be done. You can't do anything with the mountaineer, either; I tell you, this thing of lifting up the lowly can't be done. Not so darned high. Talk about self-help; well you just don't know these people -- you don't know the class of people we have here... All you can do with 'em is give 'em work if you've got it or food if you haven't. And pretty soon they'll want food without work; they do already, many of them. This is verbatim from a man who has hired and "known" labor hereabouts for thirty-five years. I should have enjoyed taking this man with me to Belle Vernon. It will be seen that life in Fayette County depends almost soley [sic] upon coal mining. There is some agriculture but the condition of this has been noted. As I said in my last letter less than 50 out of more than 150 coal and coke plants are operating. It is admitted that a large proportion of those shut down never will reopen; many of those now operating have only a few years coal ahead of them. Coal is "going back" on the County; what was once a rich empire is almost ready to be dumped by its rulers; it has been bled white both above and below the ground. Populations have been left stranded not only without work but without prospects of ever being reemployed in coal mining. What are they to do? Are they to remain indefinitely on direct relief. Will they have to move into other communities for possible absorption into other industries? Are they to be placed on homestead projects? What is going to happen to them? Every thoughtful person in Fayette is asking this question and all discussion concerning relief ends at this point. When I ask people for their impressions of the effect of relief they all take the short view. Perhaps the truth is that, so far as present relief is concerned, no other view can be taken -- perhaps, so far as the long range results are concerned, relief is having very little effect at all. It is helping the children. Mal- nutrition, which always has been the bane of child life on these depressing patches where for forty years bare existence has been so pitiably depressing is being reduced for the children are getting more milk from relief than they ever did from the best pay envelopes. That is something but it is not enough for the future of these youngsters under the present circumstances is hardly brighter than that of the parents. sylvania. Dunbar-Jones, so far, sees few reasons for concern. Mostly, Exxon's announcement, alongside similar announcements from companies like Standard Lithium, feels like a great excuse to dress up Lewisville and collaborate with surrounding towns to open the region up for business. She's been told the area could see hundreds of new jobs. "We're losing people to lack of adequate housing, lack of adequate employment," she said. "Now that lithium is coming, everyone's trying to come back." The land around the Smackover Oil Formation remains scarred by years of eager and often ill-planned petroleum extraction, its streams contaminated by oil and brine. Exxon and other companies looking for lithium have participated in public meetings where they've allayed environmental concern, Dunbar-Jones said, declaring their methods to be safe and environmentally sound. But she still wonders. "How can you really know before they come in and get started?" she asked. Critical minerals extraction is subject to a relatively loose framework of regulations, and it can be quite destructive, said Marco Tedesco, a climate scientist at Columbia University who has researched its extraction worldwide. To exploit the Smackover formation, Exxon plans to tap the lithium-rich brine 10,000 feet below ground using a process called deep lithium extraction. "They pump lithium from the bottom - similar to fracking," Tedesco said, adding that the process requires an immense amount of water. The brine evaporates, leaving lithium salts and other byproducts, some valuable and some toxic. "People living by a mine, they have a right to exploit this economic opportunity," he said, but in practice, Tedesco sees most of the benefits leaving the communities where extraction happens. Ramped-up regulation, Marco Tedesco said, could help ensure the communities that provide the materials needed to wean the country off of fossil fuels see more of the benefits, and fewer of the problems, that fossil fuel extraction brought them. But he cautioned that will happen only if rural, working-class communities like Lewisville and Gillette are involved in a public and transparent process to shape the policies needed to do that. "Involving communities at decision level in the early stages, investing in addressing environmental impacts, projecting the consequences on future generations, and sharing the economic and financial benefits with the communities should be moving together," Tedesco said, "like the elements of a choir."

The USGS survey showed the potential of 5 million tons to 19 million tons. That amount, said Science Alert, is nine times the expected global need for electric vehicles in 2030. The Smackover formation extends from Texas to Florida and includes parts of Mississippi, Alabama and a bit of Oklahoma, but to date, the "sweet spots" for commercially viable amounts of lithium have been concentrated in southwest Arkansas and northeast Texas. A piece of land in Union Parish near Oakland owned by Exxon and operated by Exxon subsidiary XTO Energy could be the first Louisiana lithium test well. A permit for the wildcat well was applied for on June 9 and approved on July 17 by the Monroe District Office of Conservation. There are many details that point to lithium testing, says Shreveport-based mineral consultant Skip Peel. He said Exxon's last Smackover well permit in that area was 10 years ago. It was listed as a "dry hole," plugged and abandoned. Union Parish is just over the state line from Arkansas' tested and verified lithium levels. Google Map screenshot The depth of the new well permit is a giveaway, Peel said. "There are other XTO wells and Exxon wells that are in the same vicinity, but they're drilled to 2,500 feet. They're drilled to 4,000 feet. There's nothing anywhere close to 8,750 feet." That depth is where lithium is being found just to the north, he said. In earlier news releases on their plans for southwest Arkansas lithium, ExxonMobil stated that reservoirs for the lithium-rich brine were "about 10,000 feet underground." The well is on Exxon fee land, for which Exxon owns both the surface and mineral rights. This could work in Exxon's favor even if the concentrations of lithium in this part of the Smackover are lower. "If north Louisiana has even 250, 300 parts per million, which would be fairly low compared to southwest Arkansas and east Texas, what does it do to the economics that Exxon also owns the minerals and doesn't have to lease it from any private individuals and also owns the land. Right now, those situations, as far as I'm aware, do not exist in southwest Arkansas or east Texas," Peel said.

These groups all need labor and resources. Get help if you need it, give help if you can.
It seems that we should not be asking people if they “got milk?” and instead think about how to use up the existing cheese supply without adding to it. The funds used to subsidize the overproduction of dairy and maintain “cheese caves” may be better spent elsewhere. Smaller farms should be included when the government does subsidize dairy, and there may be creative solutions to avoid maintaining caves of cheese below ground. It is important that special interests do not acquire billions annually for an industry that knowingly overproduces, not to mention pollutes the environment, in the face of declining consumption. Instead, the government should help these farmers transition to more in-demand crops instead of pushing less healthy ones into the stomachs of Americans.

The color can be distinguished from the hellish gray-dust color that coats everything now, but it doesn't stand out as much as one might expect from life or death warning markers. Screen translation of the text at the bottom of the post: "This morning, the occupation army began drawing a yellow line inside the Gaza Strip with cement cubes, which means we will lose more than half of the area of our Strip on the ground. According to the statement, any approach by residents will be met with fire"

The Global Sumud Flotilla has always been clear: our mission is to break the blockade and open a humanitarian corridor for sustained aid deliveries. The supplies we carried were both real and representative: real because they were urgently needed, and representative because civilian ships cannot carry the full scale of aid Gaza requires, which only becomes possible once the blockade is lifted.
