I've surveyed an abandoned orphanage surrounded by corn fields, seen creepy abandoned objects in the woods, and talked to many unnerving landowners. But the scariest thing I've seen doing this job is this freak.

Cannon Beach and Astoria are both great. Excellent hiking and food options. Also really great if you grew up loving The Goonies.

John spent the rest of his life working as a barber in Galveston. Sometimes at exclusive hotels like the Tremont, other times operating a shop out of his home. Always living with or near his mother, Anne.

He was heavily involved in Reconstruction era politics, serving as the Ward Chairman for Colored Republicans in Galveston County and helped organized a union for journeymen barbers.

Years ago I was on a project recording an African American beneficial society cemetery. The markers had been buried, including that of John Q.A. Potts. Born in Louisiana in the late 1840s/early 1850s, he was in Galveston, Texas by 1862. Which means he was likely present at the original Juneteenth.
