i would posit that a puppet’s core classification is that the mouth/face is controlled by a hand, and not simply a human head. big bird is a costumed man, but his head and mouth are controlled by the human operator. there are some fursuits with features more similar to puppets.

i think it is likely the assumption that a “woman” will always need a husband to support them in life. almost assuming that a female can’t live alone and support themself. and to them, that is “love” and it’s just a matter of survival. which is cold comfort i know.
