something like c# (say) will come with ‘built-in’ network, json (and xml) parsing, threading… that somewhat ease development when you don’t have the luxury of a framework team (and not trying to coerce you into jumping ship!)

thinking about it - on turn, a slight rotation of the camera could do wonders (minor tilt + some left/right?)
