Twitter once was pretty popular amongst devs because it offered free public APIs.

Offering an open ecosystem can be useful as a growth strategy, since it means 3rd party devs will contribute to improving your ecosystem. But as platforms seek to become monetized, that openness will slowly fade away.

By that I mean the current implementation of direct messages.

Unlike the AT Protocol ecosystem, in which currently almost all users are on the same PDS, the ActivityPub ecosystem is a lot more diverse and decentralized.
Unlike Bluesky, Mastodon actually cares about being a decentralized platform and therefore doesn't add features in a centralized way.

The reason why Bluesky will never actually do anything in opposition to the currently fascist US government is because they are an american company and have already sold out to venture capital. They will ultimately follow down a similar path as Twitter and never actually have any moral principles.
