His humanity and complexities are what make him so interesting and the painfully ugly parts are as valuable as his inspiring positive qualities. He's someone to root for and to go "yikes dude wtf" at and I want to see him grow and learn and heal.

He's had the most horrible things done to him and he's done horrible things to other people. He's suffered and been abused and hurt others and tried so hard to be better and been hurt more and failed to learn from his mistakes and caused more hurt...

He always strives for self improvement but it doesn't lead to neat character arcs. This is partially bc of the nature of magic story having lots of people working on it but it's also bc he struggles to grow and properly learn from his mistakes, more like an actual human.

Seconding what radley and renske said. He's very interesting and layered, full of contraditions in a way that's painfully human and the subject of some of the best writing the game has to offer.
