I dunno, several championships since 2010 have come down to the wire in quite dramatic fashion, and this season particularly has been closer than ever in terms of lap time. This stat feels custom made to gloss over a lot of things, not the least of which is Rosberg's win in 2016.

Heck, 48 of the last 52 WCCs were won by 5 teams. This is not particularly a new phenomenon.

20 of the last 25 WDCs were won by 4 people.
23 of the last 27 WCCs were won by 3 teams.
I just think "consecutive races in contention" is an exceptionally odd conditional that doesn't really add anything.
