People are working more, under worse conditions, for less. The social wage has been cut. Widespread poverty makes things meaner, morale low, and nostalgia/conservative ideals a big thing to navigate. We still have the pandemic to navigate, but doing so without it being widely acknowledged.

Societal atomisation being expressed in a boom of solo games, as well capitalist realism translating into the inescapability of Gygaxian Fantasy, which now dominated big publishing (WOTC, Darrington, MCDM) as well as Indies via the OSR.

It's great to be a designer, but it's awful to do so...

The post-WW2 social peace in the UK/US/Europe is worn, anti-authorotatian consciousness is at its lowest ebb, and we live under fascism. The struggle is to reach out beyond the logic of capitalism and authoritarianusm as it tries to have us divide and comodifiy our humanity through our art.

Being able to smell nothing is an amazing boon, not a curse.

Using the given example of yellow paint having been worn away by years of acid dripping down, it gives a limited form of flashback to the long years before the PCs were present, while inviting us to imagine what is there now based upon a shared understanding of the past.
