When I translate Catullus writing as Sappho, as Ariadne, as Attis, as Procne, am I bird or birdsong? The journey, or the backwards glance?

This conference programme looks spectacular.
I find conference organising super stressful, but it is a chance to imagine the field in ways that interest you.

I'm very proud of the programme we have for our joint Romantic Studies Association of Australasia / David Nichol Smith seminar - you can see it here www.wgtn.ac.nz/fhss/about/e...

One of the wonders of reading, writing and teaching fiction is seeing the truth that the supply of stories is inexhaustible. It's like discovering infinity in what might seem a finite space. There is always another fold in even familiar corners of the universe.

I love Starling - some of my favourite poems in Starling I later saw into print when editing selections for the AUP New Poets series, others I have taught in class. These four poems from Starling are wonderful, surprising choices - which Starling poem would you choose?
the 4 editors pick a fave each from Starling - read and love today, and reread and relove over the weekend ⭐️

HOT LIBRARY INTEL: you can ask your library to purchase specific titles for their collection, usually right through the library's website.

Librarians can't know every single new title, nor can they mind-read what their patrons might want to check out. Give it a shot!

I love this series, where poets pick a favourite poem of theirs. How could Chris Tse choose just one? But this one is amazing, and revisiting it now after all Chris has written since, it seems richer and more riddled than ever:

Should NZ spend $50B on roads to nowhere?
E.g. 2nd Mt Victoria (car) tunnel in Wellington (3rd if you count the Mt Vic bus tunnel) has a BCR of 1.0, meaning that the government wants to spend $3.8 billion on a project with no net benefit. HT @thespinoff.bsky.social

We’re spending all our money on roads that suck
At this point, the New Zealand government is basically just a road-building authority with bits tacked on. And not even a very good one.
