this might just be one of the funniest fourth wall breaks i’ve written in a fic.
He queues up Revenge of the Sith on his TV. The opening space battle should be stimulating enough, all that visual chaos and Williams's score. But he's seen it dozens of times, and his eyes keep drifting closed during the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise, which is not a story the Jedi would tell you.

“Gautier,” Byleth says, pronouncing Noah’s given surname slowly. “Your brother is looking for you.” Brother? Noah nearly forgets about Sylvain. The word ‘brother’ is still foreign to him. He grew up with twin sisters, Natalia and Sabina, and he never really met other boys as a child growing up. Noah tries to say something — an excuse, something to get out of this — but nothing comes. Byleth shifts their weight slightly, their posture relaxing for a brief moment. “How are you adjusting to the monastery life?” Noah shakes his head, a wordless answer. Byleth seems to understand. They nod once, and invite themselves to sit across the table, hands folding neatly in their lap. The conversation is a silent exchange, a sudden wave of comfort spreading throughout Noah’s tight muscles. He relaxes his own posture, trying to mirror the way the Professor sits, proper and polite. He knows he looks awkward, trying to mirror Byleth’s exact position, but the Professor doesn’t seem to mind. Unless they’re too kind to say anything about it. “Have you met Sylvain?” they ask, their voice cutting the silence like a swing of a sword. “He’s the heir to House Gautier, and I think you would enjoy his company. Although he can be…” their voice trails off, as if searching for the right term to describe Noah’s new sibling. “Well, you will have to see for yourself.” Noah swallows, shifting slightly in his seat. “I…” he tries, but his throat tightens, incapable of speaking. Instead he shakes his head, and makes a gesture with his hands: No, I haven’t. The Professor seems to understand and nods slowly, as if processing the older boy’s silent response. He’s still learning how to communicate, how to use his body to speak for him when he can’t find the words or imagine the things he wants to draw out.

The days soon bleed into one another. Emil stops counting after what he thinks might be the fifth sunrise. There’s no point — each cycle is identical to the last, an endless loop of buzzing lights, gawking faces, and dead fish sinking to the floor ike offerings for a god who wants nothing to do with them. The wound on his shoulder has long since healed, mermaid flesh knitting itself back together with practiced efficiency, but it leaves a faint, silver scar. It’s a reminder of Emil’s place. You’re trapped. Hurt. All alone. His body begins to betray him. The hunger is a living thing now, his stomach aching, longing for the taste of sea-grapes and kelp. Emil’s hands shake when he holds them in front of his face, his vision blurring at the edges, darkness creeping in whenever he moves too quickly. He knows he should eat — knows that his stubbornness is killing him slowly — but every time he looks at his ‘offering’, something in him recoils. I am not an animal… The mantra grows weaker with each passing day. Emil spends most of his time in his hiding spot beneath the fake coral, tail curled around himself, watching the world through half-lidded eyes. He’s stopped drawing in the sand, stopped blowing bubbles. Stopped doing anything except existing, if this hollow drifting can even be called that.

Standing on the rooftop of an old cathedral, Joseph holds his camera in both hands, angling it downward to capture the city’s dark, grey landscape. Adjusting the aperture, he clicks the shutter button and a flash releases from the antique camera, capturing the city in a brief state of peace. His long, white hair cascades down to his hips, blowing in the breeze as he turns his camera vertically, once again clicking the shutter. When the next picture prints from the camera, Joseph grits his teeth, huffing a sigh. This place brings memories back that he’d never wish to capture on camera, let alone keep in his mind. This city is a reminder of failure — and those failures began so long ago, Joseph has lost count of how many years it has been since the death of his family. His parents were murdered, right in front of him, and he’d only been twelve years old. He watched them die, unable to do anything about it but watch. When his twin brother tried to intervene, he’d been the next victim. Joseph tried to stop it. Tried to scream at the top of his lungs, to beg the killer to leave his brother alone, to take him instead. But the killer didn’t listen. They just took what they wanted — his family — and left without a word. And three years ago, Joseph became The Photographer — a vigilante armed with high-tech cameras and digitalized computers tracking every move in the city. The police were too slow so many years ago, feeding into the corruption and bribes of crime bosses and other dangerous individuals. Greed is more powerful than any gun or knife, no matter how armed to the teeth somebody is.

Miklan has overstayed his welcome, it seems. It's only 12:30 on a Tuesday afternoon, and out of all the places he could've picked for his lunch break, he chose a bar. Not McDonald's. Not Raising Cane's. A damn bar. But it's quieter here than McDonald's with its obnoxious kitchen beeping, and it doesn't reek of that coleslaw Raising Cane's insists on serving with every Box Combo. He always asks them to swap it for extra fries. They never do. The raccoons behind his house have started to expect it — Miklan's weekly coleslaw delivery, like clockwork.

“I dunno about you,” Miklan says, his gaze flicking from the kitten to his cup of tea. “But I really don’t think I’d trust myself to lead my own teenage ass into a battle.” Orangie lets out a soft chirp. “Am I worried? Of course not. I just didn’t think I’d go from an errand boy to leading a bunch of kids into some ancient ruins in the span of a few moons.” The kitten yawns. “I’ve been here since the very end of the Verdant Rain Moon, and that’s about… three moons? Didn’t think I’d get that ‘employee of the month’ title so quickly.” Orangie curls back up into a little ball and lies down, falling asleep. The conversation (if you can even call it that) is over.

She doesn't scold him for wasting it. She just points to a small bush with bright yellow citrus hanging from it. “Those are sour. Might wake you up.” Miklan approaches the lemon bush. He picks one, examining it like it’s an artefact of the Goddess. It smells clean, sharp, and chemical. That’s promising. He peels back a section and bites into the wedge. His eyes water instantly. The acid hits his tongue so hard he actually recoils, dropping the fruit back into the dirt. He coughs, his hands flying to his mouth. “That burns like hell,” Miklan wheezes, glaring at the offending fruit like it personally attacked him. “That… I don’t even think it should be legal to eat.” “Lemons aren't for everyone,” Hapi agrees, looking amused.

The sunbeam is a perfect, warm rectangle on the floorboards. Lucky Shadow, or Lucky for short, lies in its center, a sleek black void soaking up the morning light. His tail gives a lazy, contented twitch. The house is quiet, as it should be. It smells of old paper, dried lavender, and the faint, clean-sharp scent of his human’s bandages. It smells like home. A floorboard creaks in the hallway. Lucky’s ears swivel toward the sound. The footsteps are soft, hesitant. They always are. Noah, Lucky’s human, appears in the doorway, a silhouette against the dim hall light. Even from here, Lucky can see the dark circles that swallow the space beneath his human’s strange, red eyes. The white of the bandages around his head is a stark contrast to his messy black hair, and more wrappings peek out from the cuffs of his oversized sweater. Noah’s scent is a familiar mix: gentle soap, the paint he uses for his artwork, and the ever-present, underlying hum of fear. “Hey, Lucky,”

She walks over to the desk to dispose of the bloody cloth. As she passes, her eyes catch the parchment pinned to the bulletin board. The pages covered in the rough, repetitive scrawls of his name. She pauses, her head tilting slightly, as if she’s just assessing the progress. Miklean. mikLON. M I C K L A N She doesn't offer praise or comment on the 'expressive' handwriting, just simply nods once, a small, final confirmation that the “homework” had been done, and she was aware of his effort. Then she opens her door. “I will be in the next room,” she states. “If your breathing worsens, you will knock twice. Understood?” “Yeah. Sure,” Miklan mutters, the lie tasting like ash. He wouldn't knock if his lung collapsed. She closes the door behind her, leaving him in the absolute, smothering quiet of the room. He remains splayed on the bed, still clutching his shirt over his ribs, staring at the perfect ceiling.

Hi my name is Miklan Dark’ness Dementia Anschutz Gautier Way and I have long blood hair (that's how I got my name) with purple streaks and red tips that reaches my mid-shoulders and brown eyes like limpid tears and a lot of people tell me I look like Amy Lee (AN: if u don't know who she is get da hell out of here!). I'm not related to Gerard Way but I wish I was because he's a major fucking hottie. I'm a vampire but my teeth are straight and white. I have pale white skin. I'm also a witch, and I go to a magic school called Garreg Mach in Fodlan where I'm in the seventh year (I'm seventeen). I'm a goth (in case you couldn't tell) and I wear mostly black. I love Hot Topic and I buy all my clothes from there. For example today I was wearing a black corset with matching lace around it and a black leather miniskirt, pink fishnets and black combat boots. I was wearing black lipstick, white foundation, black eyeliner and red eye shadow. I was walking outside Garreg Mach. It was snowing and raining so there was no sun, which I was very happy about. A lot of preps stared at me. I put up my middle finger at them. "Hey Miklan!" shouted a voice. I looked up. It was... Felix Hugo Fraldarius! "What's up Felix?" I asked. "Nothing." he said shyly. But then, I heard my friends call me and I had to go away.

Felix shoves him off, scrambling for purchase on the dusty floor. He gets to one knee, breathing in ragged, painful gasps, a trickle of blood already escaping the corner of his mouth. Miklan pushes himself up, his whole body a symphony of fresh aches, his head pounding. They stare at each other across the small space, two bloodied, panting animals ready for the next round. “I’m… going to kill you,” Felix grits out, his voice shaking with a rage so profound it’s almost holy. “Try it,” Miklan spits back. They’re about to lunge at each other again when a voice, sharp with shock and disbelief, cuts through the haze of their hatred. “WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING YOU MOTHERFUCKERS?!” It was……………… Sylvain!

The voice belongs to the most obnoxiously noble of all the students he’s seen, the one with the fiery orange hair and a posture that screamed ‘I am Ferdinand von Aegir.’ He turns slowly, his glare not leaving his face. Ferdinand is beaming at him, utterly oblivious to the storm of resentment in Miklan's chest. “I was just telling the Professor that integrating you into the fold is a truly noble endeavor! Every soul has its place, and finding yours is a duty we all share!” “First of all, how did you even know my middle name,” Miklan says, although he isn’t accusing or questioning it — just sick and tired of people. “And second, this is nothing but community service.”

The Professor leans in, her proximity making every muscle in his body tense. She begins to read the oath aloud, her voice flat and devoid of any judgment, which is somehow worse. "I, the undersigned, do hereby swear my fealty to the Archbishop of the Church of Seiros, and to the divine goddess who guides her…" As she speaks, she moves his hand. The first letter of his name is a shaky, pathetic thing. He feels like a child again, a clumsy, stupid child. Her hand guides his through the rest of it. M-i-k-l-a-n

The children, initially imitated by his size and armor, are won immediately over by his booming laugh. “This flying shield is a marvel of Midgardian craftsmanship!” he bellows, catching the plastic disc with one hand. “Now, watch as I return it with the force of a mighty storm!” “Thor, wait—” Bruce cuts in, but it’s too late. With the flick of a wrist, Thor sends the Frisbee soaring. It shoots right up into the sky, almost defying gravity as it slowly disappears, flying further and further to the sun. The children fall silent. “My apologies, small warriors. My strength knows not its own limits in gentle games.” Bruce pats his arm gently. “It’s okay, big guy. Just a little too much relative velocity.”

As Alva works with practical ease, a new variable enters the equasion. Joseph’s own hands move, catching Alva’s wrist in a firm grip of his own. Alva glimpses up, eyes slightly widening, caught off guard by the abrupt movement. The smile on his face remains, and both men realize now, the attempt of establishing a power dynamic has just experienced a critical failure. Joseph slowly removes Alva’s hand from his waistcoat, instead guiding it to his side in a silent command. A flicker of curiosity appears in Alva’s eyes. His own methology is being used against him. He remains still, his body an object of Joseph’s own study — a muse, not a subject.
