Like Gov Newsom or not, he has been instrumental in showing us how to break some of those chains.

Came here to say this.

*Final! (Argh)

Lots of good thoughts here! Agree there was no good solution. I think I've come down to the stance that the DEMs mistake was, more than anything else, in their timing of their action.

I actually had a hard time watching this - watching him smile congratulate her as if this hasn't all been his fault. I do try to stick to politics and avoid name calling, but I'm going to take a pass on that at the moment: He really is scum.

I have a vague memory (admittedly from at least a decade ago) that Italy imports US durum wheat to make their pasta.

I WAS GONNA ASK! (Hello? Is anyone else noticing this??)

If Mace was gonna cave, why bring in Boebert? Insurance policy?
November 12, 2025 at 8:35 PM
Mmm hmm. I've been thinking we need to sow some distrust there.

Yes.

Then we can tell her she's not nearly as cool as MTG.

Agree 100%.

I never had a paid Spotify account, but did cancel it anyway. I didn't use it that much, and wanted to make a point. But yeah, that's one way around it.
I think focusing all efforts on Spotify is the object right now. Make an example of them. Then move on to next victim. Lather, rinse, repeat.
November 12, 2025 at 6:57 PM
No doubt. I saw Pandora on a cancel list this morning. More and more, I'm just completely out. No more subscriptions, period.

I also think we need to sequentially step up the "asks" of Americans, in the same way that America isn't going to go from asleep to a General Strike overnight. That's kind of why I see the Spotify action as a bit of a test. If we can't do the small thing, we definitely can't do the bigger things.
November 12, 2025 at 6:15 PM
Valid! Their strategy seems sequential. Step One = save democracy. The country is burning. If we manage Step One, we can move to Step Two - rebuilding it the way we want to rebuild it, including addressing what you speak of. End Citizens United! But a simultaneous strategy is another way.
November 12, 2025 at 6:13 PM
I think their point is to use both carrots and sticks. But I don't see myself going back to any of these sorts of things, personally speaking.
November 12, 2025 at 5:59 PM
Bonus points!!! I sold my AirBnB stock back when that was cool, and IT FELT SO GOOD.
November 12, 2025 at 5:54 PM
I have been crazy on board with this for quite a while now, even giving up some software I've really used a lot. I. Just. Won't.
Buying should mean owning, until *I* choose to upgrade. I am D.O.N.E. with that model.
November 12, 2025 at 5:52 PM
That said, **personally** I've left nearly everything. Those remaining see little to no traffic from me or are projects in the works. (I'm currently un-googling my life, to the extent possible, which is a job!)
November 12, 2025 at 5:49 PM
Agreed, though by focusing everyone on one service, we can do real damage, setting an example and causing others to potentially hesitate before jumping on the band wagon. I believe that's the strategy.
Then we move on to the next. One by one we pick them off until they see the light (aka money).
