Frustrated, but not giving up, Ema sat down and prepared a new series of inquiries to wring the truth from Mr. Wright. These were all immediately discarded when she witnessed the extreme change in countenance of Mr. Wright, breathing heavily, mouth agape, and appearing altogether to have witnessed a horror or apparition at his front door. In his hand, he held an ornately decorated envelope. “Who called, Papa?” Miss Wright asked, grabbing the invitation from his hands before he could stop her. “Trucy–” he whimpered, sounding quite like he had been stepped on by a horse. “Mrs. Foster. Assembly–Papa! Were you invited to this ball?” Miss Wright eagerly asked. The invitation certainly was not her, as she must be not yet ten years of age. Ema ran past Mr. Wright and to the front door, flinging it open to gain a glimpse of the calling party. The woman departing appeared in a trance, not even noticing Ema. She was dressed fashionably with delicate features, certainly rich and with the aire of a noblewoman, but it was clear to Ema that this woman attempted to conceal great distress, with her shoulders rigidly straight and her (excerpt stops)
