books I've read in 2025:
The Dumas Club, by Arturo Pérez-Reverte
A bit dense at the start but overall fun, although it gives a pretty intense vibe at times that the author resents both women and the fact that he's attracted to them

also Feet of Clay by Terry Pratchett changed how I thought about freedom and personal responsibility, then the Acts of Caine by Matthew Woodring Stover changed it again
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!
tell me about a book that changed you
for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

oh man there's a Lot but reading the Silmarillion when I was about 12 or 13 definitely made some permanent changes in my brain

This a big deal: "China’s carbon dioxide emissions have been flat or falling for 18 months"
China's economy has grown by ~5% in the last year, so this comprehensively debunks the idea (again) that emissions are tied to growth. So yes, faster progress needed, but this is how you turn the corner.

so in the past couple of weeks I've had major surgery, lost a job, found a new job, bought a house, and got halfway done packing up the old house so we can go on holidays with Max's family for their mum's birthday
