All the Woulda-Coulda-Shouldas
Layin' in the sun,
Talkin' 'bout the things
They woulda coulda shoulda done...
But those Woulda-Coulda-Shouldas
All ran away and hid
From one little Did.

selfhood begins with a walking away,

I can also see repeated attempts as an effort to trigger the password hint system that some websites use, but I feel like most scammers know which websites do and don't do that. Obviously not all these people know everything and many aren't that intelligent, but it's kind of weird if that's why.

I could see it being like a semi-subtle form of harassment in some cases, or to make people scared their account is being hacked, but it seems a stretch. There are easier ways to harass people while remaining anonymous.

Yes, I know scammers send fake "reset your password" emails and whatnot. This is not that. This is when they go to a legitimate site and do "forgot my password", which generates a legitimate email to the account holder. It's very weird.

Like let's say a popular influencer deletes an old social. Hacker revives the account and pretends to be them. That has some cache, I suppose. But it doesn't make sense to me for non-influencer/creative websites. Scammers wasting their time is great, but it's strange that they do it so much.

Even in a case this involves an account with say, bank account access, I'm not sure what value this would have for a hacker, because a username alone doesn't generally get you retroactive access to that information. So the only conclusion I'm left with is that it's just about identity theft.

Or do they focus on old accounts not used much/at all, so that the victim gets annoyed they're being bothered, deletes their account, and then the hacker can "remake" the account posing as the victim?

Obviously if they have my email, they're in. But in the instance they don't, this does nothing for them. Is the assumption people will change the account to something easy to guess? Does recently resetting your password somehow make an account easier to hack?

I know obviously that not all mountaineering guys are evil, but the number of guys on dating apps who list hiking or some similar outdoorsy thing as their main hobby and all these terrible stories really make me not regret missing out. You can die from a lot of things, but the pattern here is...
