Husk’s viewscreen was awash with digital readout as the ship identified and assessed the hundreds of military ships floating about the Sol system. Each one of them was the equivalent of D14’s escort vessel, or one of the twin ships that had assailed them at the Prism. Each one capable of turning Husk to ash at a moment’s notice. A squadron of seventeen boxy, grey dreadnoughts was moving in a strict formation towards them now. They had parted to let the Black Husk into their midst like a returning hero, or a beloved celebrity.
Or a sacrifice for the altar, Rune thought with a shiver.

“Pride-class vessels usually have a crew of two hundred,” Lilith said with a stern set to her lips. “I’m not registering any life signs among the wreckage.”
“Marcus, I fear that you have been away from the Accord for too long,” D14 responded. “The peaceful Forge sounds like a lovely place. But this galaxy is at war. We cannot afford the same mercy that you are clearly used to. Earth must be defended at all costs.”

“Then we make it a wide-band transmission, no set target. I’ll do that now. We’ll tell the whole planet where Marcus needs to go.”
“Good thing this satellite network isn’t intelligent, then,” said Lilith.
“Oh, I’d beg to differ on that point.”
All eyes shot to the viewscreen. The voice was an unfamiliar one. Deep, breathy and patronising. Masculine. Vital. But still with the clinically clean edges of a machine translating its thoughts into less efficient speech.
“Who the fuck are you?” Avalynne demanded.
“Me?” replied the voice. “I am the governing intelligence for the Accord Planetary Embargo Commissioning System. You can call me APEX if you like.”
From over the curved horizon of the planet came the wide disc of the satellite core. Its thrusters were burning, and its glassy eye was shining.
“The question, my noisy little intruders, is who are you?”

You aren’t supposed to be here.
Miriham’s crew were spectacular. A real mix of backgrounds, cultures and opinions. Gremory had never seen aliens like First Officer Aki and his fellows before. And yet, they all got along. They had a means of sharing one another constructively and productively. Compassionately. Without the need for strict corporate guidelines on crew behaviour. Gremory was starting to wonder if it was because they lacked those guidelines that they performed so well. He wondered, but he came to no conclusions. And there was a limit on his learning in his current state. They wouldn’t let an invader like him into their midst. They wouldn’t incorporate his New Accord sentiments into the mixing pot of their camaraderie. He wasn’t one of them. He wasn’t supposed to be here.

Marcus takes a trip to the hangar, the home of the Rune Carrier's alien arsenal of psychic crystal.

The hangar was a strange, unreal place, one Marcus hadn’t often visited during his time on the Rune Carrier. The ship’s crash on Fei’s world had torn the side of the hull off in a massive, jagged scar, and they had fixed it with a big slab of pinkish Elysian crystal. During the battle with Basilisk, Rune had shattered that crystal to grant them a moment of surprise and had once more exposed the interior of the ship to the void.Now, the narrow hangar was where they kept the crystal armaments. There were three of the massive, dagger-shaped weapons lying close to the crystal edge of the ship where Sparrow could take control of them. Then she’d open up the cracked pink wall and let the blades fly. They hadn’t bothered to bash out all the dents in the rest of the room, since it spent a lot of time open to space where nobody could reach it. And it seemed to be the place that got damaged the most often. The rippled floor and twisted walls were testament to their many sacrifices.

And the result of this New Accord invasion was that he was being given more freedom to operate out in the wider galaxy. It already had the chairman’s speech loaded up. “You made an awful lot of promises. It seems to me that-…”
“Promises you gave us!” Mischel shouted.
“-…that without providing a clear plan of action, your constituents didn’t have much faith in the direction you were taking your planetary government. And your reference to the Universal Education Initiative in particular was riddled with ignorance. Frankly, I am not surprised that so many people rose up in arms. You make an opportunity to bring the forgotten citizens of the Accord up to the academic standard of galactic scholars sound like some sort of tyrannical re-education scheme!”
By Mischel’s side, an elderly woman rose up on her tentacles with a snarl, only to have the man on her far side push her back down with an anxious shake of his head.
“My point is that in this new partnership of ours, you have to be ready to take on change. You have to understand that change necessitates upheaval. And you have to trust that my leadership will be ready to greet you once that upheaval has been resolved. The reactions of your people demonstrate that you committed too quickly, without setting the necessary groundwork, and you did not declare enough trust in the New Accord to lead you. The damage caused by the transition is regrettable, and you have my sympathies. Now,” he finished, finally dropping his smile. “Pick up the pieces. Then we can get to work.”

“No. But we don’t know who they are or what they’re capable of. There’s every chance that they are armed in some way. It’s better to assume the worst in this case, I hope you agree.”
“I do not agree.” Miriham folded her arms and glared up at Gremory’s wide eyes. “Your suggestion is a very military one, Lieutenant, but I have seen no need to resort to military measures of this magnitude. This stowaway covertly fled the Halbardier’s Gambit, a ship which is now several AU from our position. This is evidently not a ploy to steal from us. It feels an action of desperation to me.”
“It feels?” Gremory asked with a turning of one corner of his mouth. “Sorry, Captain, but I don’t feel comfortable acting solely on feelings.”
“That is because you are the New Accord,” she said with a smirk. “Cain’s tutelage has allowed your intuition to atrophy. Allow me to handle this situation peacefully.”

“Was he always this cool?” asked Camarilla. And then she blinked with surprise at Zuo’s loud laughter. Aki, meanwhile, was blushing angrily.
“I am sorry, XO!” Zuo sighed, wiping a tear from his cheek. “But no. I cannot in good conscious call him ‘cool’.”
“Really?” asked Cam, leaning eagerly forward on her seat.
“He was a quiet, shadowy recluse,” said Zuo. “He cared only about reading! He never came out to play with the rest of us! Truly, we all thought him awfully weird.”
Zuo could feel his self-esteem building at the chuckling of Siege and Therese. Fair recompense for the ‘big boy’ thing, he thought.
But Aki was also smiling, if a little bashfully. “I wish I could argue. But frankly, I know what you speak of, Zuo. Yes, I was not exactly the most outgoing of youths in my time in Elys, was I?”

But Camarilla shook her head. “It’s because he was so quiet before that his words now are so meaningful,” she said with a smile for the black cat. “You can tell he means what he says because he spent so long saving up the… the weight of his words. It’s very special.”
Zuo stared at the big, gazing eyes of the girl, and the awkward smile of Aki, and he shook his head in disbelief. When he looked back over his shoulder, Siege offered him a sympathetic shrug. Yes, this girl was down bad. Aki would have to watch his back.

Gremory leaned forward on his elbows, and Miriham suddenly became aware of how close they were sitting. The round booth had space for another eight or so people, but it was just Miriham and Gremory, their shoulders almost touching on the circular table’s farthest end. “Th-The Elders?” she asked him. “Were they not with us?”
“They scurried off about an hour ago and are yet to return.” Gremory’s smirk was boyish and more than a little exciting. “We may have been an unwitting pair of third wheels for the happy couple! This planet is something else, isn’t it? But don’t use Elder Cohen’s appetites as an excuse to get out of my interrogation.”
“I-Interrogation?”
“You’ve been battering me with questions all month, Miriham! Allow me just a little revenge. You do owe me, remember.”
By her ancestors, it was awfully warm in here. Miriham fixed her eyes resolutely on her drink.
“Have at me, then,” she said. And when she heard the undertones of her provocative choice of words, she took another stiff drink to calm her nerves. Gremory’s chuckling did nothing to help.

Anchor’s flailing didn’t recede as he had hoped. They panicked silently for a long, uneasy moment.
“User Griffon,” they said at last, “please identify yourself.”
“I’m a friend,” he replied.
He could feel the AI searching him, probing him with digital tendrils. Testing his claim. Griffon left himself wide open. He allowed Anchor to scan every inch of him that they could reach. It tickled. Then it hurt when Anchor retracted their attention with a sharp snap of digital impulse.
“Threat analysis, impossible,” they said with a quiet, mournful resolve. “Contamination risk. Assumed threat levels in excess of safe parameters.”
“Anchor, no!”
“Eden Protocol engaged.”
Griffon stepped back with alarm as bright light burned from the centre of Anchor’s Prong. The lines of data that formed the whirling cloud glowed brightly with cybernetic heat. For a mere instant, even in the digital realm where time was less important, Anchor burned. And then they were gone. Griffon’s legs give way beneath him as he stared at the nothingness that Anchor had become. They had deleted themselves.
