yeah i do think Romulus is just kind of a very good alien movie and a very bad one stapled together, for exactly this reason. such a good core premise and they waste so much of it on disconnected references later on

on that note a lot of people could do a good famous blue raincoat but i would want to hear one from janelle monae, metropolis suite v specifically. like think about sally ride and victory for the tone palette there

my pick for an interesting hallelujah cover would be mcr in the time between bullets and three cheers. ani difranco would do a better one but her spot in my leonard cohen cover fantasy draft league is already taken by chelsea hotel #2 which i think fewer ppl could do right

compare the buckley and wainwright covers, for instance. even with the same accompaniment it would be hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby, because buckley is willing to rush ahead or lag behind, particularly at the beginnings of lines, while wainwright does the vocal equivalent of clapping on 1s and 3s

you could summarize the plot and leave out setting details and you'd have something that sounds kind of french new wave. if i could remove all but one of the horror/scifi elements, i would leave in the derivative hack performance artist who just staples a bunch of non-functional ears to himself

whole movie that takes place in the space that would have been the second act of an 80s/90s cronenberg film. it's in the space between when you've adjusted to the big scary thing that changed your life and when it finally makes the status quo untenable. it's a setting where that space spans decades
