I was digging around in the ssb-server code from a decade ago and I accidentally dug up some screenshots of the original "Phoenix Network" client for secure-scuttlebot.

yes, and all of these things are trying to bend a web3 (on the pds, as jay imagined it) thing into a web2 thing. that is where my train of thought came from. pfrazee demonstrated a decade ago that data can exist anywhere at the same time.

that's ok, i already know what to tell me

i don't fault @pfrazee.com for it. i imagine there's someone on their board who wants Bluesky to be a Twitter clone where the liberals get to ban people. Might as well make their dreams come thru.

if @pfrazee.com's article is about whether Bluesky should Web 2.0 themselves then i support that! do it now so we can get on with our lives.

"the old version could be retained under a new repo key" why not just append mutations and deletes to the repo and sort out the final view later? this would make notifying the view about cleanups/rerenders easier i imagine.

does any of this matter at all? the keypairs are on the pds so they don't really secure anything.
November 13, 2025 at 9:30 PM
it doesn't have to be this way, but it is this way. you see kobayashi maru, i see the way thru
November 13, 2025 at 6:46 PM
it can be both
November 13, 2025 at 4:41 AM
yah it's getting to the point where i mention bsky and someone tells me it's a twitter clone where liberals get to ban people
November 13, 2025 at 4:38 AM
it's only kobayashi maru because of atproto's design flaws. if it had localfirst everyone would be responsible for moderation and distribution not simply a tiny overworked mod team

Sounds more like you are looking for peer to peer technology rather than any flavour of fediverse.

i just wish i could sync whatever the person said from their computer to mine so i can see what they said and judge for myself if i want to deplatform them from my hard drive
November 12, 2025 at 8:21 PM
i can't find this story, so all i can do is go on and on about atproto's centralizing protocol design choices, can you write it up?

also it was too many React observables being attached to the DOM that crippled Patchwork anyway -- that was Facebook's fault

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Ultra-Wideband either didn't exist 10 years ago or none of us had access to it. But maybe someone made a plugin? don't recall

ssb also had many features that bsky/nostr/wiredove currently do not have. local wifi sync for example was an insanely futuristic feature that no distributed social network currently has.
November 12, 2025 at 5:02 PM
for historical reasons -- whenever i talk about bsky/nostr/wiredove i end up referencing ssb, but because the implementation is broken there's no way for people to experience how things were back then. I want a working demo so I can explain how all of these things are different

i'm hoping chat can get this era of ssb working for me -- since it seems to be the purest implementation of what the idea was supposed to be.
