We're the UK-based scientists working on ESA’s Euclid space telescope, on a mission to map the dark Universe! 🔭 🌀

"...the ultimate cosmological model - no evolving dark energy, it’s all just a cosmological constant.

But I really hope that Euclid, with all its precision, will see some real departures from the standard model..." (2/3)

Euclid has since recovered and its map of the Universe continues!

Back on Earth, our planet's atmosphere and magnetic field work to protect us from the more harmful effects of this space weather. Instead, some of us Euclideans got to see the beautiful northern lights in action - even in light polluted areas! 😍

And, thankfully, space agencies regularly monitor the Sun using satellites so that we can anticipate incoming space weather events like this. Here's a view of last week's incoming storm from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)... 🕶️

This led to a couple of days of unusable data. 😬

Lasting damage is done to the telescope’s sensitive detectors, but this was planned for in the mission’s design and Euclid can take much more damage still before its instruments seriously degrade. 💪

At the peak of the storm, the increasing cascade of cosmic rays causes the (already huge!) data files to become too large for Euclid to transmit back to Earth and you begin to see the view from some of the detectors appear to disappear entirely! 😳
November 19, 2025 at 11:51 AM
But those are no snowflakes. Instead, Euclid's detectors are being bombarded by the very same particles that caused us on Earth to see the aurora. Instead of a spectacular light show, Euclid sees a cascade of cosmic rays! ⚡️

What you're seeing there is Euclid's window to the Universe. It's the view of the VIS instrument, made up of 36 detectors arranged in a 6x6 grid. 🔲

But during the intense space weather last week, Euclid's usual view of stars and galaxies deteriorated into something resembling a cosmic blizzard! ❄️

"..., where, like, either you do winter sports, or you don't do anything all winter. I'm gonna be there for a few years so I decided this was the opportunity. And I also like jigsaw puzzles. I only have analogue hobbies - I don't look at computers when I'm out of the office!” (3/4)

"...I've also got into cooking Japanese food. So, I can now reliably make a good katsudon. Because it's expensive to enjoy food without learning how to make it yourself! So I forced myself to start enjoying the process.”

“I got into snowboarding this year. Because I live in Innsbruck..." (2/4)
