Now watching: Beyond the Rocks (1922). Long thought to be lost, a nitrate print was rediscovered in 2003 and it was restored and rereleased in 2006. #film

Now watching: Millennium Actress (2001). I don't think I've seen this since college. #movies #anime

On 10/6 I saw the Dandy Warhols at the Bellwether. I'm an old fan, loved these guys years ago. The show was a little off - basically no movement on stage, forgot a verse and had to repeat a song, and skipped my favorite song (Last Junkie) even after talking about it. Oh well, still fun enough.

On 10/5 I saw one of my favorite acts, Improv Shakespeare, who tonight performed "Henry 3000." I was expecting some sort of far-future Henry lineage, but instead it was all Outkast puns - classic. Must admit I was not impressed with the Largo at the Coronet venue. But still a fantastic time.

And always wonderful to see Bruce Campbell in theaters. The best.

They also played a bunch of behind the scenes footage ahead of each one! Very cool to see on the big screen.

In early Oct I got to rewatch the original Spider-Man trilogy in theaters. Front row seats and usually alone. They even showed Spider-Man 2.1. As a big fan who saw them all when they first came out, this was super exciting to me. (Though the Regal Paseo in Pasadena must be the worst theater in LA.)

This building was a bank a century ago, now there are bathrooms through the former vault door. This is such a cool space for a theater.

The underground theater space was pretty cool too and the Latino Theater Co did cool stuff with the sets. The play was pretty good - funny, even if the message of the play was a little muddled. Great acting from "The Law" character especially, straight out of an old pulp noir.

On 10/2 I went to the LA Theater Center to see a preview of the Little King of Norwalk. Tbh my real motivation was just to see this building I walk past all the time. Look at this Beaux-Arts neoclassical brutalist beauty! Biggest stained glass ceiling in the west! Spectacular! #theater #architecture

This movie just broke the fourth wall and had Sinatra and crew looking out and pointing straight at me, while singing about a guy at home watching his television set. How did I just get called out from 70 years ago wtf

Didn't love this one. Astaire and Rogers were both brilliant, but the plot was complete trash and the writing was nonsensical. And Victor Moore gave one of the worst, most off-putting performances I've ever seen. Great dances, great music, nothing else worked at all.

Top Hat was fantastic! One of the best mistaken identity romcoms ever. And such amazing dancing, so many good setpieces! A quick scene with Lucille Ball before her fame too. Great music. So funny. "Well if Madge doesn't mind, why should I?"

Can't wait to see more Berlin/Astaire/Rogers.

It ended with a tea ceremony and final chance to pay our respects to our hero, laying a flower over his funeral chariot.

Thrilling, chilling, moving, fantastic in every way. I wish there were more events like the Cortège!

The dramatic conclusion led to a festive dance party with some of the beasts.

No words can really do this justice. It was like being on another planet in a completely fantastic culture. Those robot dogs always make me uneasy.

On 9/28 I attended the Cortège. This was an event unlike anything I have ever seen before. A mythologized funeral procession and celebration of life, with creatures, robots, drones, giants, and more. All through headphones.

In September, I also went to BrightonSEO in San Diego. Most of the talks seemed basic compared to the last couple years; mostly "Intro to AI," but it was nice to know I'm apparently ahead of the industry on this stuff. There were still a few great talks too, and other smart attendee gossip! #seo

On 9/20 in WI, I saw the Folliez, our annual local talent show. Some years have been... mixed... but this year was actually quite good! A couple small disasters but nothing major, and lots of acts that were even, dare I say, enjoyable. My parents and I had another lovely night at the #theater !

On 9/19 back in WI, I saw Cheeseheads: The Musical with my mom and dad. And boy it sure was something! I was thankfully not chosen for the crowdwork exorcism to praise Cheesus. Lots of enjoyable local charm, definitely couldn't be shown in any other state. We had a great time. #theater #wisconsin

For the story, Hepburn was miscast. She did great, but the story falls apart because she's still ridiculously beautiful even in rags. "Oh, I bet you I can transform this guttersnipe into a duchess" doesn't work when the 'guttersnipe' is a generationally gorgeous film icon, just dirtied up a bit.

I didn't realize this movie was 3 hours long
