I read a book. It was disturbing

The Vegetarian. Han Kang, 2015.
The author's first novel to be translated into English. It's hard to describe this story of mental illness and taboo, set against the backdrop of a society where people are expected to conform.
You'll just have to read it yourself

I read a book. It was good enough

Cosmogramma. Courttia Newland, 2021.
Short stories, mainly sci-fi, a mix of good, okay, and 'sorry, I'm not sure I understand what that was about'.
I liked that most were set in England or thereabouts

I read a cookbook. Now I'm hungry

Sweetmeat Making At Home. Mrs M E Rattray, 1904
A delightful little book full of yummy things you'd never see in a confectioners today. If only I wasn't on this stupid pre-op diet, I'll sell my grandmother for some marzipan fruits 😢

#Zillathon2025 3: King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962)
This enjoyably meta entry paved the way for future instalments. The buildup to the final battle is long and both monsters have seen better days, but the campy tone and absurd spectacle of their climactic confrontation make it all worth the wait.

Now, the franchise is starting to lean into deliberate comedy. This installment may not be intelligent, but it is a lot of fun. 4 stars

I read a book. It was fine

A Feast of Folklore. Ben Gazur, 2024.
A light-hearted look at folk customs and beliefs relating to food and drink. I would have liked something more in depth, but there's plenty of interesting nuggets of information

I read a book. It was irritating

Dandelions (1972), the last - and unfinished - novel by Nobel prize winner Yasunari Kawabata.
Ineko has been left at the metal hospital by her mum and BF. On the way back they have an endless, circular, existential conversation.

Not for me.

Know1ng (2009)
Sci-fi apocalypse story with Nicolas Cage.
I was expecting it to be cheesy, but it works, despite Cage's one facial expression, & one dramatic pose, and the religious overtones. The end of the world is nigh, predicted by numbers in a time capsule
Had a proper cry at the end

#Zillathon2025 Gaiden: Mothra (1961)
This more offbeat kaiju film has a few pacing issues and the effects suddenly take a downturn at the climax, but a refreshing tone, plenty of charm, and an entertaining villain ensure it doesn't lose your attention.

Oh and Mothra's in it so that's also a plus

I’ve only just stumbled across the fantastic fact that Margaret Thatcher’s 1970s voice coach, who taught her to lower her voice and speak more resonantly, was none other than Catherine Fleming, who voiced the evil Animus in bonkers 1965 Doctor Who serial The Web Planet. The Zarbi’s not for turning!
