Oh and "usage" raises the specter of a nasty little saying we have here in NZ: 'user pays!'.

The concept, originating from hardcore free-market thinking, is that nothing should be 'free'; there should be literal or metaphorical toll booths everywhere, for everything. Everyone pays. Disgusting.

That's the point of income tax - it does hit everyone, approximately fairly - which is more than can be said for most taxes! If you're poor you should pay little or no income tax. If you're rich, you should pay a lot.

Driving or not driving is irrelevant; we all rely on things delivered by road.

Lowest income households *should* be paying little or no income tax.

If they aren't, that's a separate problem to be fixed; putting a flat rate tax on driving doesn't fix it.

All these taxes, charges, and duties are bad and wrong because they're *paid at the same rate by rich and poor alike*.

Abolish all taxes and duties related to cars, and pay for the roads from income tax. *That* is fair; earn a lot, pay a lot; poor pay little or nothing.

Scots here. We lived in midtown Manhattan for several years - for all that time, we did not own a car. We took the subway or cabs, mostly. When we did want to go far out of town, we rented a car.

Only a hardened masochist would want the hassle & expense of owning and parking a car in midtown!

Meh, I still prefer (and still hack on) Google Glass. These things don't even have a display!

With the exception of advertising, I don't see anything on Facebook that isn't posted by someone I'm friends with. The key is the URL you use: "facebook.com/?sk=h_chr" shows you only your friends posts, in chronological order, as the Goddess intended.

At this point I believe you must befriend a geek with an endoscope.

Not trains. The North Island Main Trunk is already electric - that doesn't mean it's fast! Our railways are narrow gauge single-track and simply too twisty to ever be much faster than they are. And we absolutely don't have the population to make possible the building of new shinkansen-style lines.

There's no room for debate here; an erratic!

Kiwi here. Same story here - no tipping at all, I'd never tip for service, it's just not done.
