This happens to already marginalized voices because that status and things like generational trauma make them ideal vehicles for promoting policy objectives. And if they figure it out— no one listens to them. Nothing happens. No one will help.

We help by not letting it happen.

Whatever funding, support, or otherwise these groups can offer, it almost never plays out in favor of the US based groups.

They end up discredited in the eyes of their peers, groups splinter from intentionally sown discord, and all of their work ends up wasted.

My concern will always be that authentic voices are not only heard but also not preyed upon by well-resourced, ideologically driven groups who will pretend to share values as a means to use these people.

This is a decades-old phenomenon.

There's been several instances where the messaging flows from the actual FTO to NGOs and activists to local protestors who may know nothing about the origin.

This is important. These groups do not care about human rights and they will mess with and use activists for their own ends.

Protests organized by MB alums have included overt symbols such as Hezbollah or Hamas flags this past Oct. 7 in NYC. Hamas channels at the time, were using the same messaging and circulating Oct 7 footage like it was a family vacation. They were promising to do it again.

In a few cases it does seem like that could be the case. For the US, it's ability to enable foreign influence is the main concern. I don't want to say much more because people tend to misunderstand the mechanics and overstate what’s happening. Hamas is the most well-known branch of MB, though.

4/ China and the EU are investing heavily in climate-risk analytics because they understand food system resilience as a national-power issue.

You know who isn't replacing their best scientists with quacks? China. Why? They don't want to FAFO when it comes to food supply and national security.

3/ Extreme weather is already imposing billions in losses. And you know who ISN'T canceling climate modeling (because it's a basic component of national security)? China.

2/ Agriculture depends on predictive models. Cancelling "climate-friendly" farming might sound like nothing. That's a branding problem because what it's canceling is farming resistant to weather changes that cause famine. It's cancelling prevention of regional instability.

It’s a fair question. It’s not a simple situation and that partially why the US has gone back and forth on how to handle it. This covers some of it. extremism.gwu.edu/sites/g/file...

Absolutely. Them not being designated especially in the 1990s is baffling. I think people in the US want it to be as open to all religions as possible.

I support that but you have to pump the brakes and listen to the states that know whats up.
