but there's a whole morpheme different there- I think that mishearing is more notable for thinking you heard /ed/ (or the context making you think it wasn't obligatory). noun vs participle has more distinctions here than just one vowel

I'd also note that many people in my life who don't merge these don't usually notice that I do unless I mention it; it's not usually a source of confusion the way pen/pin can be. Like how caught/cot almost never causes confusion, due to context and other cues

What I would say, sans IPA, is Mary is usually higher and more towards the front of the mouth, marry is in the middle, and merry is lower and more towards the back- but in my regular accent I merge all three and end up with comically different accent impressions when trying to demonstrate this

My family is full of people with wildly different accents who have merrily married Marys, which is probably part of why I can't remember which specific vowel mapping goes with which accent

I have the merger and my default is closer to [æ]; I can say and hear all 3 if I really want to but I can't usually remember which one is supposed to be which, particularly between Mary and marry
