A true public good.

Much like the crypto boom and not being able to buy graphics cards: they were using them, I guess, but people got more value out of gaming rigs than society did from Dogecoin.

I am also uncertain there — I kinda consider that to be an unnecessary and honestly orthogonal point to what’s frustrating about the situation, appealing to emotion. They could be fully utilized and it would have the same effect, and the effect is what matters IMO.

Is every use of an LLM evil? No! Is OpenAI evil? Without a doubt.

We have no reason to be "fair" to an industry that's made its bones on theft and lies. Bring them down, then we can talk about being fair to LLMs.

This is why people are are so disinterested in hearing "the other side": the defenders of AI have ranged from dismissive to outright gleeful at the harm this is causing, couching it in the language of inclusivity and anti-privilege.

The LLM industry is evil, full stop. It hates you.

What people like @justinwolfers.bsky.social also refuse to do is engage with the out-of-the-gate, abject hostility the AI industry and its biggest hypers have shown to creatives and others whose work has been stolen to power this. Where are the demands for "fairness" from them? Nowhere, obvs.

AI has driven zero proven, measurable productivity gains outside of a few narrow use cases, and what data we have suggests those narrow use cases are less impacted than anecdata suggests. This assertion that we need to be "fair" about AI comes from PR and conjecture only.

Yes! Yes!

I remain stunned that there is so little writing about how, say, Clara's arc is so clearly inspired by Ace's aborted arc, or how the Timeless Child is clearly the playing out of Cartmel's Omega ideas, etc, etc, etc.

They did! I have this running theory that basically all of modern Doctor Who through Chibnall is by people shaken up by the failed attempts at story ideas through the 6th and 7th Doctor eras, and their shared frustration at never seeing the Cartmel Master Plan executed. The animating force.

Eleven is an angry old man. Twelve is moving past being an angry old man.

Thinking about the person who insisted to me that the Capaldi Doctor is just an "angry old man" and getting cranky all over again.
