Is Johnson’s team on a mission to be the most unpopular mayor in this city’s history? What’s going on here

Was downtown last night, and this incident seemingly did nothing to keep the crowds away from the Michigan Ave lights festival. Which proves that despite the occasional high profile incidents people aren’t deterred by them.

They had a bunch of ‘old’ animatronics on display from their 2004 window theme. ‘Snow White and the seven dwarves’, the fairy tale, not the Disney money. Hard to believe a retailer would splurge on a custom set of animatronics for one seasons decorations. Retail has fallen far.

FWIW the store really fills out during the holiday season. Looked great. My only gripe is the Frango cafe/bar they had up by the walnut room had a ridiculously small amount of seating relative to the space?

Macys on State Street is really leaning into Marshall Fields Nostalgia this year. The windows look great. Hard to believe they had an entire studio here at one point that would redo all the window displays weekly. Listened to a pair of parents explain Marshall Fields to the kids

Edgewater is kind of a microcosm of Illinois politics. A backwards low density hamlet absolutely dominated politically by that big city dense area with skyscrapers to the Northeast

Interesting fixer upper condo just hit the market on the lakefront in Lakeview. 3 bed, 3 baths. 1926 pre-war. Classic floorpan. Rough around the edges but would clean up great. Asking $399K with monthly assessments of $1.6K/month, not horrible www.realtor.com/realestatean...

A rendering from the opening night. One of the great opera stars of the time performed opening night, Adelina Patti, opened the theatre. The mayor and governor were of course present. The president of the United States, Benjamin Harrison and his vice president, were also present.

The great skylight is currently undergoing a complete restoration and will be backlit sometime starting sometime in 2027. The original gilded stenciling will be replicated on the panels surrounding it. Cannot wait to see how it turns out.

The two side murals continue this theme. Depicting spring on the north shore and winter in southern Wisconsin.

“O Soft Melodious Spring time! First born of life and love”

“A great life has passed into the tomb. And there awaits the requiem of winter snows”

The mural above the Proscenium was executed by Charles Holloway of St Louis, who beat out Louis Comfort Tiffany in a design contest. It depicts the cycle of life and death. The apex depicts an angel with the declaration “The utterance of life is a song. The symphony of nature”

Designed so that every seat in the house was an excellent seat. Except the boxes, which were added last minute at the insistence of Chicago society and to the great annoyance of the architects. Who had a far more egalitarian design ethos and ambitions

Louis Sullivan’s signature design styling is everywhere. It might not code this way to modern eyes, but these designs were a complete break with European styling. Sullivan was attempting to make a homegrown American aesthetic. Unfortunately for the the Columbian exposition happened.

I finally got to see Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler’s Auditorium Theatre last night. When it opened in 1889 it was the largest opera house in the world. Today it remains probably one of the most important showcases in American architectural history.
