A #painting to look at. I can’t imagine a beautiful life without dark clouds. "Estuary Cloud" came from a place where you hear soft sounds, water quietly touching the shore, a lone bird calling out for a friend, and in the distance you can just make out - is it a tractor? #art #SpeirGhorm #ArtYear

A somewhat stylized or simplified coastal scene predominantly green with a high horizon.The lower three quarters of the painting have wide uneven diagonal bands of colour, each with a slight gradient. At the bottom is canary yellow, above it a very dark, almost black, blue, then a warm green grey, then a green band, than a darker grey-turquoise, then another green, then a small amount of yellow before a sliver of dark alizarin and bold red right below the horizon where a sliver of almost white water reaches in from the left most of the way across the painting. Sitting on the horizon are three stark heavily undulating green hills with black ends by a gap where possibly the sea comes in. Have a #painting. "Knocknarea III" came out of my annual visits to County Sligo where I get to visit the iconic mountain. This is a view from the south as you wend along the coast - which I recommend you do, ideally on a bicycle. #art #SpeirGhorm #ArtYear
Wide landscape format in acrylics on canvas. Coastal scene on a sunny day with pure pale blue sky. A series of fields with a bright blue bay coming in from the left in the bottom half of the painting in a sharp triangular wedge with the point at the right edge. In the foreground the near side of the bay are slivers of horizontal fields, a green one across the bottom edge with odd long yellow blades of grass, followed by an orange one behind it with strokes of soft green throughout to indicate it's a crop of some length, and on the right it has up to a couple dozen bales of hay in circular black plastic with light creating an arcing light blue highlight on each one. There is a dark green and red hedgerow on the far side of that field with a particularly large bush to the left of centre, and behind it are a couple of lime green and olive green fields with a line of bushes on the right close to the water's edge. On the far side of the bay is a beach of grey pebbles with a line of dark wine seaweed along the centre of most of it. Behind the shore the land slopes up gently with about a dozen horizontal fields of yellow-green and bright green, and about half way up them is a cluster of houses on the left and a line of a few houses with farm and outbuildings extending into the centre of the painting. They are suggestive more than exact, in greys and whites with roofs of dark blue and purple. At the top of the slope on the right is a field with rows of yellow and green coming down towards the viewer. Behind that sloping landmass is the main piece of the painting, the isolated humpbacked mountain of Knocknarea, with it steep grey stone side facing the viewer, the green of a mass of trees at the left end, bright green of fields with the pink of heather, on its lower slopes, a pale maroon streak along its top of heather, and the bump on its very top that is Queen Maeve's cairn. A #painting from another life. "Donegal Cottage II" - Where I lived when myself and my dog would talk and walk for hours. There was no hill to give this view, nor hot air balloon handy, so I did what I do when I need to look down and simply floated up there in my head. #art #SpeirGhorm #ArtYear

A #painting I finished and sold last year. "Connemara Boats", a view from a small but storied bridge in south Connemara, east to the Rosmuc peninsula - a stunning part of the world. Past them and a 5-bar metal gate is more water, a deep burnt orange reflecting the seaweed that rings the grassy rocky outcrop or islet behind. Beyond, across a pale teal bay is a strip of land with fields, and the suggestion of stone walls among the small number of houses that are dotted there. Beyond it is a long low painterly purple hill and behind it further away is a long lilac ridge, also quite painterly, the both ends of which taper down to reveal distant blue mountains. Have a #painting. "Irish Street IV" came out of my obsession with squares and rectangles that I can indulge by standing on streets and staring. While I gave this painting a generic title it actually came out of a happy time standing and staring in County Kerry. #art #SpeirGhorm #ArtYear

A west of Ireland #painting. "Sligo Mountains" was finished and sold last year. It came out of cycle trips along the Sligo coast when I enjoyed being escorted by the Ox Mountains towards Ballysadare and Sligo town. I've also been up into them by those woods yonder. Beautiful. #SpeirGhorm #ArtYear

A #painting. "Chapelizod", a mixed media piece I did during a long weekend a couple of years back where I traveled all over County Dublin doing sketches on location. For this neigbourhood next door I steered my bike downhill then stood sketching between vehicles and showers. #ArtYear #Speirghorm

#painting "The Gate Theatre, Dublin" I'm never entirely sure where the Rotunda, the Ambassador and the Gate all meet, but I love this view on Cavendish Row. Because of the shapes. Arches, curves, columns, a portico, a fountain, and a big roundy bit, as well as a modern squarish add-on. #SpeirGhorm

Feels like a day for this #painting. "Poolbeg, Kayakers, Sunlight" came out of monthly cycles past Scotsmans Bay where I would invariably stop and enjoy the views across Dublin Bay and wait for kayakers to paddle into my picture. #SpeirGhorm #ArtYear #Scape

Across the middle of the painting are bands of pale blue for the distant tree/building line, then the rear of Dun Laoghaire's stone East Pier rendered in mid-blue with some light blue stone work and the odd orange stone, and immediately below it is the band for the pier's protective rip-rap rendered in dark blue with light blue and orange rocky details. The left kayak is light blue and right one is yellow. Both figures have orange life-jackets and orange paddles but other wise they are dark silhouetted against the dappled sunlight on the water. Abstract painting in portrait format in acrylics on paper. Distinct primary coloured blobs punctuated by downward narrow strokes of lilac, are all painted over in a pattern of tiny contour lines in yellows and reds, with the gaps between the lines being no more than the width of the lines themselves. The lines are arranged in such a pattern that if they were actual contours on a map there would be eight peaks spread out over the painting.

Under a plain mid-blue sky we look straight on at the front of a red-brick 4-story Georgian house, 2 window bays wide, with half of each adjoining house either side in the same terrace. The street surface is painterly purple with white perpendicular parking lines. The house is mostly orange brick with multi-coloured pointing, the house on the left is more pink brick with pale yellow pointing, and the house on the right more brown brick with blue pointing. Doors have white fanlights and columns, with yellow and grey steps down to yellow footpath. Window frames are white with glass showing dark reflections. Have a #painting why don't you. "Bantry Brendan" was painted because I like sitting in the west Cork town eating a sandwich as I look up at the sculpture, by Imogen and Ian Stuart, of Brendan the Navigator looking out to the Atlantic - or Bantry Bay at least. #SpeirGhorm #ArtYear

Last weekend I was in Barcelona sketching and generally having an amazing time. This is Barceloneta, in the large Plaça del Poeta Boscà with its wonderfully funky market building. #urbansketching
A panorama sketchbook is opened with a colour sketch across both pages making an extra-long panorama. Paper is rag cotton with deckled edges. Sketch is done using black ink line in various fineliners, water based media of vivival color sheets and viviva pan set, inktense coloured pencils, white gel pen, posca pens, Liquitex acrylic paint markers, Faber Castell grey brush pens, and Derwent paint pens. View across a large square at a line of buildings mostly narrow and 5 or 6 stories high, though a wide orange one on the right half is just 3 stories high. Most of its windows have some form of green shutters or cloth coverings, and the large ones have balconies. At street level it has shops and many bicycles are locked in stands outside. Adjoining it on the right is a tall pink building, 3 window bays wide and darker at street level. A green building to its right is obscured by green foliage on the right edge of the sketch. The other apartment buildings to the left are mostly creams and yellows, some with long balconies across all three windows of each story, and others with isolated balconies. Those buildings gradually go behind a large building in the square dominating the left half - that of an old market with a modern metal black covering of various planes sloping and arching. In front of the market are two large yellow umbrellas over people eating at a cafe or restaurant. The leftmost building behind the market is a glass tower of narrow blue and green windows. The sky is a bright blue, matching the blue of a metal square kiosk in the centre behind which is a gap in the buildings as there is a street leading to the square there.

The opposite side of that street extends to the right in sunlight where the row of 2-storey buildings faces the green with trees. Nearest building on right looks like it might be a pub, white with black windows, doors, fascias and corner stones. Past it the buildings are brown, ochre, bright pink, and then small and indistinct pale colours. Roofs are slate of a very dark blue. Green with trees has a footpath around its edge and on the near end corner are a tree stump and behind it a flower planter. Surface of street is muted dark teal in shadow and paler in sunlight. Street surface is a darker turquoise in shadow and pale teal in sunlight. Sky is a cloudy yellow, cut by overhanging street wires, and peeping through a lot of holes in foliage. Tomorrow I'll be in Liverpool, so here's a sketch I did there a couple of years back, on the day we interred my mother's ashes in her hometown - as I cycled to Waterloo and sketched this group of buildings on South Rd before returning to family and going to the cemetery. #ArtYear #UrbanSketching

#painting "Clontarf Shelter" came out of a cycle one morning from Howth harbour home to Dublin west, when I stopped a few times along the promenade at Clontarf to enjoy the architecture of the wind shelters, resolving to paint one when I got home. #ArtYear #SpeirGhorm #WindowsOnWednesday

Since I started filing copyright infringement reports to get my paintings taken off Temu, a small industry of AI replacement paintings has sprung up, with dozens of brightly coloured paintings purporting to be by me. Here's a sample of what is supposedly Dublin's Poolbeg chimneys - painted by "me".
Screencap of 2 rows of 5 products, 8 of which are square cushions and one from each row is physical picture in portrait format. All of them have boldly coloured industrial chimneys, with some autumn foliage on trees or overhanging in the foreground. The blue water of a bay is visible in most, and the skies are blue or cloudy white. The number of chimneys is 3 or 4 in all but one which has 2. The chimneys are random blotchy areas of red and white, or just cream, rather than the red and white bands of the top halves and plain concrete bottom halves, of the actual poolbeg chimneys. Visible prices range from below €3 and €4 to one that is under €8.

An old #painting for you. 31 yrs ago I did a cycle tour by myself of the newly independent Czech Republic. Březnice was a town I stayed in and when leaving I enjoyed the view looking back at the church in the square where I stayed. A few months later I painted that view. #ArtYear #Scape #SpeirGhorm

Under a grey and white sky with red underneath breaking through, we are looking up a curving street lined with 2 and 3-story houses, all rendered in panels of oranges and yellows. The house on the right has a black skirt as do two of the houses on the left. Slate roofs on the left are rendered in red, orange and violet. Antennas are attached to most of the houses at the front from by upper story windows. The windows of all levels in the houses and the church are dark purple and blue. The street is curving to the right to the side and back of a large church similarly coloured save for two dark onion domes at the top of towers either side of the front which is facing left so we can't see it but for the tops of the towers. The street surface is a dark grey and foothpaths both sides are purple with lilac kerbs. Signed top left, LIAM '95
