Gone. He's gone. Kestrel knows it the moment she opens the door to Ora's tear-streaked, haggard face, Father's sheathed sword in the elf's hands. The world dims, the room suddenly hot, air too thick to breathe. Ora's voice is raw. "I'm so sorry, kit." The pet name stings, one Ora has used since Kestrel was a child. It clings to a normalcy that's been shredded to bits. Her legs and arms won't move. Kestrel stands silent and numb as Ora slips inside, closing the door behind her. She sets the sword gently on the small table near the hearth of the small home Kestrel shares—shared, and oh how that thought feels like swallowing glass—with Father. Ora stares down at the weapon, avoiding Kestrel's gaze. Finally, speech comes. "How?"

His eyes are the pale blue of winter skies, reflecting the firelight, framed by dark lashes. Her gaze flickers down to his lips, the dimple at the corner. Wondering if there might be another way to drown her misery tonight. Curious to know if all the tales of bards are true. Gods, that whiskey was strong. But she says, "I failed at something tonight. Something I'm usually quite good at." "Which is?" He peers at her over the edge of his cup as he takes a sip. "Magic."

Kestrel and Astarion take their first bath together, which can get interesting when one of those involved doesn't need to breathe.

Kestrel can't help but stare. "This looks like Sharess's Caress." A laugh bursts from Astarion as he brushes the silken sheets with a fingertip. "Later," he promises the bed before they approach the true main attraction. The large, steaming tub in one corner, more than big enough for two. Longing rests in Astarion's gaze as he looks into the water, stirring the rose petals floating on top. But if anything, the yearning deepens as he turns to her. Kestrel's heart flutters, a tight shiver in her stomach. Gods, will she ever stop feeling like a flustered adolescent when he looks at her like that? Astarion's hand lifts from the water, damp fingertips stroking her cheek as his other hand tugs lightly at the laces on her robe. He leans in and she meets him halfway, his lips soft and yielding against her own.

Kestrel takes another shaky, stuttering breath in, lets it out. Again. The bark of the tree is rough against her palms, head hanging low, eyes closed. Another breath. Gods, the smell is worse than she thought, but she doesn't know how far she'd have to walk to escape it. It smells worse than the docks, than a slaughterhouse. Meat and offal. One of the caravan's children still cries uncontrollably, wailing sobs. A quick check had shown none of their charges were wounded, just shaken and terrified. This journey was supposed to be routine, uneventful. It was the whole reason she was here. A harmless route shadowing Father and Ora, both of them present mostly to set the travelers' minds at ease, more than any danger of a real threat. A way to experience such a journey before the need for any true fighting.

Her helplessness to save Wyll from Mizora's curse, or to find the answer that would cure Karlach fully. Gods, Karlach. Phyr will lose her, too. Tears fall freely now, her hands balled into fists on her knees, nails digging painfully into her palms. She bites her lip to keep the sobs silent, violent convulsions with no sound. It has a particular flavor, this despair. A hollow hunger that swallows her whole. Every doubt amplified, every hope dashed.

Kestrel's back arches. Gods, why hasn't the done this before? Of course the answer is clear. She's been too focused on studies to bother with distractions. But as her robe falls open, she sighs. Her stomach clenches and flutters. Alira can't know Kestrel has yet to take a partner in bed. That she would be the first. Alira's fingertips skate down Kestrel's bare chest, and the room suddenly feels hotter. Should Kestrel tell her? But then Alira might stop, and that's the last thing Kestrel wants. The woman straddles her on the sofa now, running a thumb across Kestrel's lower lip. Giving in to impulse, she bites the finger lightly, and the elf smiles.
