Engagement Hacks Labeler

Labels accounts suspected of engagement hacking (e.g. mass following accounts in an effort to get return follows, especially if unfollowing afterwards).

Mostly manual. DM (or @, or reply) to appeal.
Labeler Update... Unfortunately, not a happy one. Frankly, I’ve been burned out bad since the holidays and haven’t really gotten much motivation.

Another frustrating thing is that I can't respond to appeals via Ozone. I'd love to be able to respond to people who appeal and clarify my reasoning, but if they don't have open DMs I don't want to start a discussion publicly.
Apologies to folks who had appealed their labels - I didn't realize they don't show up under the main Ozone reports tab.

Also, you aren't going to be unlabeled if you're following multiple tens of thousands of people! That is not a reasonable amount of people to follow.

In case you wondered why people try the mass following hack to get more followers….
It's an excellent time for a quick look at a network of 32 content farm accounts that have been attempting to build an audience through "fun" image posts (and good old-fashioned bulk following), apparently in order to sell random crap on Amazon.

You cant possibly be reading all of those 12k people’s posts in your following feed though, why do you need to follow that many? And even with starter packs you would have had to use hundreds of them

Note: this labeler will be on vacation until the new year (automated system should keep running), as I am on vacation 🌞.

Keep on reporting & I’ll catch up in the new year.

Getting overwhelmed by reports (~50 a day!), so working on automating some of the worst offenders. This will ONLY be for reported accounts, not trawling the firehose.

If you are following more than 10,000 people, and think you have a *valid* reason for doing so, please let me know!

Hilarious to report an account for making an engagement hackers list TO AN ENGAGEMENT HACKS LABELER... what do you think we do here, exactly?

With the recent influx of users, seeing more new users following 1k+ while not posting anything at all yet.

Given the prevalence of starter packs, being a bit lenient with these sorts of accounts for now as following a couple different starter packs for a couple interests can easily bump you to 1k+

Just a heads up - there are multiple blue / dem / etc spammy accounts that are just wholesale copies of one another (& stealing that content from elsewhere - e.g. that first post is bsky.app/profile/spoc...)

One thing to note: this labeler does not deal with hate. Please send that to the Bluesky Moderation Team!

But when you send it to *all* labelers (like this one), it becomes a waste of volunteer time. There are plenty of legitimate reports that I'd rather spend my time on :)

Appreciate it!
Go to their profile, click the “…” button, and select report account. You can choose which moderation services to report to.

Report type: Other, ideally with some context (“they followed me even though we don’t seem to share any interests” / “only promoting their content scraped posts”, etc)

That's weird, since you're a bot stealing this post for engagement farming...

BlueSky is filling a void that 35+ up been looking for. Social media should be a cool distraction. Not stressful and annoying. Folks wanna laugh, have healthy banter and wit and sarcasm. A feeling of community. Not all these bots and ads and weird algorithms and engagement farming.

(unfortunately) Announcing a new label: content spam!

Seeing an uptick in users posting gibberish / unrelated words to show up in feeds and get traction. This is trying to hack engagement and will now be labeled.

As for the engagement hacks label, everything is manually reviewed & can be appealed.

Many mass follow accounts are also content scrapers... check out the great moderation list here to preemptively mute or block many of them!

FWIW I don't actively go out of my way to look for people, so if you're not mass following to the point you get reported, you're fine :)

Random person with no related interests follows me w/ 2k+ followers? I'll report it. But if they're not seeming to be very botlike, I leave it be.
I'm approaching the 1k limit and I'm concerned about getting labled. Starter packs make it way too easy to rack up my following count
October 31, 2024 at 7:57 PM
I usually use 1k following as my limit for hacking, though will cut more slack the more followers someone has (e.g. if you've got 20k following you, and follow 1k... will probably not count that).
How many followers do you consider as a hack? I swear that every day I get three new followers who have 3 posts, 32 followers, and 1.1k followed.

Pro tip: if you want more followers, try making good content, instead of mass following sixteen thousand people.

Hello world! Trying to create a labeler to replicate the old aegis label around engagement hackers (eg. users who spam follow & unfollow in an effort to get followers).

Open to any and all feedback!
