I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

finished it - author made the cardinal sin of having the bad guy be hot, charmingly villainous, have cool night powers, and be actually gay... and assume we'll still prefer the irritating protagonist 😔
Got a novel from the small press book fair today and I was actually really enjoying it!! Until about a hundred pages in and then it got... really bad.... I have a third left so I'll finish tomorrow and see if the author can pull off a decent ending, sigh
