Professor in computer science education. Also still dabbles in agent-based modelling. And when I have time, love cooking, reading and playing in a brass band.

I'm pretty bad at keeping up with things on Bluesky, but when I came on here today and this was top of my feed, I will take it as a sign that I need to do better.
Happy to be at @polstudiesassoc.bsky.social Teaching and Learning Network conference at RHUL! And by appropriate and lucky chance I can also share @rosegann.bsky.social's @alpsblog.bsky.social blog on pedagogical research in education-focused careers!

Just looking ahead in my calendar to next week and realising that I'll be in London on Tuesday for BCS Convene Conference.
Is anyone I know also going to be there?

Back in the lecture theatre teaching first years today. There's something special about teaching first years.

Usually I say that the worst thing about teaching is marking, because you get so frustrated about how they just didn't get the point.

This time the vast majority *did* get the point (and manage to state it).

Marking is still the worst thing about teaching though!

I keep saying this. I keep saying this. *repeat until death*
The UK: Wants to spur growth, be a science and research super power, a leader in AI, have more trained NHS staff.

Also the UK: Let’s bleed higher education dry because *waves vaguely at “reasons”*
Quarter of leading UK universities cutting staff due to budget shortfalls

Mighty sick of the pattern of reaching the Christmas break then body immediately deciding to give in to the lurgies. Earache for nearly two weeks now. 😢

Best part of Christmas has been seeing the joy my cat has got from her catnip mice.

And the food. The food was pretty good.

Fab quote from David Chisnall on Mastodon about using GitHub CoPilot: The costs of the bullshitting far outweighed the benefits when it worked. To be better it would have to not bullshit, and that’s not something LLMs can do.

Quite.

The billionaire founders of Virgin Galactic & Blue Origin had faith in their creations. Both flew in the first non-test flights of their sub-orbital launch systems. May the tradition continue! Cheers for the billionaire SpaceX founder flying on Starliner especially on its 1st flight to Mars.

More than 20 years living here now and I still really can't cope with the looooong nights at this time of year. 😭 Just a few more days until it starts to get better again.
