Ofc I don’t know anything about the game and it’s entirely up to you, but if your game is more story focused then maybe you just need to come up with enough effective imagery surrounding the story that can fit with the atmosphere and sit in the player’s mind while they’re playing.

If you think the story is where you want it to be and represented well, I think that can be the payoff in itself. Maybe you don’t need a full on monster the player needs to face, because if that kind of thing wasn’t planned from the start it runs the risk of feeling shoehorned in.
