Almost home! I was able to finish a peer review that was overdue (sorry, I was on vacation!) somewhere in between, but still need to work on the revision of a manuscript I submitted in August. I lost a whole day bc of the flight cancellation and really want to get some sleep but it is due today 😢

The gate wait lasted pretty long, but we were able to rebook to a later flight. We definitely would not have made it! We go through immigration fast and recheck our luggage quickly, but cannot find a way to the correct terminal. Signage at LAX is horrible! We also have to go through security again.

Just landed at LAX!
But our gate is occupied, so we will have to wait until the other plane is gone. Because we left already 90 min later than planned, our 2.5h layover, that once seemed spacious, now becomes too tight. We still have to go through immigration and customs …

As soon as we heard we had to deplane yesterday, we had booked a hotel room at the airport, while still on the plane.
Others who waited for #Delta for help, might not have been so lucky. When we checked in at the hotel they told us they were fully booked.

Meanwhile, stories are shared about people from our flight who had to stand in line for hours at the #Delta counters to get a hotel room. A group of 10 were told there were only 6 rooms left. Others were given a $50 voucher and a “good luck finding a hotel room in Auckland”.

Yes! We are allowed to get out of the bus. Oh wait! Only Delta One passenger can get off. The rest needs to be standing a bit longer in the bus.

We are shoved in the bus like sardines for another 25 min, now standing still next to our plane, waiting for some clearance to be allowed out of the bus. It is getting very hot.

Everyone is very anxious because the regular #Delta flight AKL to LAX has been boarding (and presumably left) before our delayed flight and all Americans would love to be home by Thanksgiving.

Finally, a #Delta announcement: we are still waiting for the aircraft to be cleaned. Remember, our plane has been standing on the tarmac for a full day, so this is incredibly poor planning by Delta.

There are places to sit, but ground staff does not let us sit there. Mothers with little babies and elderly passengers have to stand for over 30 min without access to that shit off area.

It was not clear at first, but that is the plan indeed. The problem is rebooking the folks with connecting flights, which will all be transferred 24h later. And it is Thanksgiving so a very busy travel time!

Looks like we will be flying in today’s aircraft tomorrow. There was a long line at the Delta counter to rebook and get a hotel room, but we booked a room in a nearby airport hotel ourselves by phone.

So 300 very anxious folks trying to make it home for Thanksgiving now have to reenter the country, fill out the declaration form again, go through immigration and then customs again. Next, all 300 have to stand in line to get rebooked and a hotel. Delta app not updating with a rebooking.

The technical issue has been fixed but we have timed out, and have to deplane. I guess one more night in Auckland…
