I was lucky to study with Asad Haider while we were doing our PhDs at UCSC. I also remember sitting down with him, debating as we inspected used tear gas canisters during Occupy Oakland. He was a brilliant and generous thinker, and the world is far poorer without him.

Gaza must remain at the center of our thought because it reveals the future. The hope that there will only be more neoliberalism, that things may slowly degrade but will nonetheless remain on course, is pure fantasy. We must destroy the present order before it destroys the world.

Just as policing functions to produce crime and thus produces the idea of a society which needs the police, categorizing particular acts as "war crimes" only functions to produce the idea that there is such a thing as a defensible, humane, or just war.

Within the movement of history, there is an immense clamor of gestures. Hands busily place components onto circuit boards as they flow down assembly lines, and arms extend to topple the chain-link fences that surround detention camps. A finger slides across the surface of a screen, a back arches to lower a child into bed, and a tangle of bodies sprints forward and breaks through lines of police attempting to encircle a crowd on the street. At times instructed or coerced and at others conscious and free, our lives are lived as gesture upon gesture, as forms searching for their shape in the world.

Ta-Nehisi Coates asks Palestinian scholar and writer Tareq Baconi “what is it about this genocide particularly” that has changed us? Baconi, who has written extensively on Hamas and the history of Palestinian resistance, points to three factors. It’s happening in full view of the world, yet still allowed to continue. The gaslighting by governments and major media creates a “dual reality” that denies what people can see for themselves. And at its core, he says, the genocide exposes the colonial foundations of Western power. Baconi stresses that the path between a fascist or decolonial future runs directly through Palestine.

Finally wrapping up the first section of my next book project.
The Beautiful Truth I. The Beautiful Truth There are ethical truths whose beauty is easy to grasp, and yet following where they lead involves nothing less than rebelling against each and every detail of the way our lives are ordered today. “Life should neither dominate nor be dominated” is one of these beautiful truths, a truth that in our time cannot promise to bring peace but only to disturb it, offering solely the assurance that it always remains possible to conflict with domination in each of its forms. In a world where domination everywhere impoverishes and subdues existence, this beautiful truth ties together all of those who remain unafraid and undefeated, who strive to depart from a life of domination and to fight for a life worth living. The beauty of this truth in the end finds its shape as a beautiful life, as a life that is lived in autonomy and in common rather than above or below, as a life that is as committed to breaking free of a world whose truth is domination as it is to breaking this world apart once and for all.

It's difficult to grasp that there are other epistemes (historical structures of knowing/thinking) b/c we're always in our own, but then you see the human depicted as humors (1574) / a factory (1926) / a cybernetic system (1966) / a neural network (2019) and then it makes sense.

It is only because of a wasteland that spreads informatically and algorithmically, deepening its desert within each life and throughout all of social life, that what is online can appear as an oasis, as a digitized refuge from the desolation that breathlessly expands. The reticular society is simply the networked presence of the life it makes absent. It is the form of domination that endlessly communicates what it has captured. It is the circulating simulation of what it has historically stolen away.

When power becomes bio-power resistance becomes the power of life, a vital power that cannot be confined within species, en-­ vironment or the paths of a particular diagram. Is not the force that comes from outside a certain idea of Life, a certain vitalism, in which Foucault's thought culminates? Is not life this capacity to resist force? From The Birth of the Clinic on, Foucault admired Bichat for having invented a new vitalism by defining life as the set of those functions which resist death. And for Foucault as much as for Nietzsche, it is in man himself that we must look for the set of forces and functions which resist the death of man. Spinoza said that there was no telling what the human body might achieve, once freed from human discipline. To which Foucault replies that there is no telling what man might achieve 'as a living being ', as the set of forces that resist.

Subjectivity, Subjugation, Spectacle Ian Alan Paul September 25th, 2025 In English there is an ambiguity in the word “subjection.” It can denote the way lives are made into subjects and thus are given subjectivity, but also the way lives are subjected to domination and thus are subjugated. That both subjectivity and subjugation ambiguously coincide in “subjection” tells us that the forms within which life is lived are never far away from the forms through which life dominates and is dominated, that the positive formation of life is always nearby the negative possibility of constraining it.1 What must be confronted in our fascist moment then is not simply the proximity between subjectivity and subjugation, but rather the degree to which fascism has made subjugation the very ground of subjectivity, to which domination itself has been embraced as the foundation of social life.
