They also connected abuses on some of these tuna fleets to UK supermarkets – including one Chinese longline fishery with accusations of abuse which has been used by Wm Morrison, Tesco and Waitrose.

Far more work must be done by the international community to protect workers at sea.

The severe lack of transparency in the fishing industry has meant the plight of migrant workers goes largely unseen by the authorities.

Now is the time for more transparency, protection for workers at sea, and an end to deceptive recruitment practices.

Deceptive recruitment practices in Indonesia and the Philippines can be compared to a “black market”.

On board, workers are denied their promised salaries, end up on ships against their will, and face abuse, poor working conditions and extreme working hours.

The lack of opacity and poor regulation in the global fishing industry has led to human rights abuses of migrant crew like Sam on board vessels. Many lack the know-how and resources to report exploitation or pursue legal proceedings to fight their case.

Many of these abuses go unseen and are hard to trace due to the opaque nature of the fishing industry. Some of the tuna caught with these abuses have even ended up on UK supermarket shelves.

People deserve to know where the fish they buy comes from. Far more transparency is needed now.

The evening was a critical reminder of the importance of protecting the Pantanal and other wetlands, to preserve them for the people and wildlife that rely on it.

Wetlands are disappearing three times faster than forests. When they are damaged or drained, they release enormous quantities of greenhouse gases.

The call delivered urges governments at #COP30 and beyond to reverse this trend before it is too late.

The goals of the Paris Climate Agreement cannot be met without wetland protection. Not only do they store more carbon per square metre than forests, they also regulate rainfall and support biodiversity and livelihoods.
