Hello new Bluesky followers!

I study U.S. politics and policymaking, focusing on the politicization of expertise and information processing.

I published a great book this summer. It's called The Thinkers: The Rise of Partisan Think Tanks and the Polarization of American Politics. Check it out!

Van Epps has been begging Trump to come to the district, instead he gets this half-gesture. This is nervous behavior

The reality, of course, is that Miller and a significant portion of Trump’s base are the ones who failed to assimilate to America’s post-WWII culture of multi-racial democracy & religious pluralism…and they are now using their power to destroy that once dominant (and still popular) American culture.
Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization

My ancestors failed to grow potatoes.

(Actually they were oppressed by a foreign colonial power that caused famines everywhere they went and came to America seeking a better life.)
Stephen Miller explains his view about why non-Aryans Musk not be allowed to emigrate to the United States.

Stephen Miller could not be more thrilled that an American service member was murdered.
Trump: “I will permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries … denaturalize migrants who undermine domestic tranquility, and deport any Foreign National who is a public charge, security risk, or non-compatible with Western Civilization.“

FYI: law and science, political science, and sociology all still have DDRIG programs run outside of the NSF but funded by NSF. The rest of these programs unfortunately do not.

I run the political science DDRIG.
NEW from me - NSF cancels grant scheme for social science research.

Seems the NSF quietly archived ALL calls for DDRIG grants in the SBE directorate. This is a massive blow for PhD students wanting to do cutting-edge social science research. 🏺🧪

Why are Democrats exploring ranked choice voting?

I think it’s to prevent the inevitable contested convention in a three way race. Since 1972, they’ve quickly winnowed the field to 2 candidates, but the PR system will eventually lead to no one getting a majority.

Scoop: Democrats eye ranked-choice voting for 2028 primaries
It's a tool that drew national attention when it propelled New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to a decisive primary win.

oh this is absolutely what i think. i think they feed him fake polls and outright AI slop
At this point, I wonder if he isn't lying when he says he has "my highest Poll Numbers, ever" since it's entirely possible that's what his aides are telling him. It's quite likely that there's an entire Potemkin village built around Trump right now.

Another case of talented conservative policy wonks leaving conservative think tanks that take a hard right turn.
Professional news: After 8 years and 300 publications at the Manhattan Institute …
… I’m excited to join the Brookings Institution as a budget & tax fellow in its Tax Policy Center. New home, but same, center-right, fiscal hawk, free market economic analysis.

There is NO FUCKING EXCUSE for this to be happening.

I had a baby die in my arms of pertussis some fifty years ago. It was a HORRIBLE death. But my fellow nurses said to me, "It's almost stamped out now, they're all getting the shots, we won't be seeing this again."

HOW THE FUCK ARE WE HERE. 😡
A third infant has died in Kentucky, KYDPH adds:

“These are Kentucky’s first pertussis deaths since 2018. None of the infants nor their mothers received the recommended pertussis vaccinations during pregnancy or early infancy.”

Abraham, a physician who is not board certified in any specialty & has made a career as an extremely partisan politician, is now #2 at CDC.

Despite working full time in political office, he is one of the top prescribers of ivermectin & he oversaw the end of Louisiana’s public vaccination campaigns.
BREAKING via @jeremyfaust.bsky.social: The CDC's internal email server now lists Louisiana physician Ralph Lee Abraham, MD, as the agency's principal deputy director -- "an irresponsible choice," according to one public health expert.

Kim Jong-il vibes.
I teased this last night in What I’m Hearing but now confirmed: Paramount WILL release Rush Hour 4 after prodding from Trump on behalf of Brett Ratner. Distribution deal. Producer Tarak Ben Ammar is lining up financing. Get ready for the dumbest possible state-controlled media.
