Instead the park was renamed to something more fitting - Páirc Hind Rajab, in honour of the five-year-old girl who, along with her family, was murdered by the forces of Apartheid Israel on the 29th of January 2024.

Last year, Éirígí activists supported our comrades in the 1916 Societies in renaming Herzog park, which was named after the Irish-born Chaim Herzog, a Zionist terrorist and former President of the Apartheid state of Israel.

In response to yesterday’s news that a motion to rename the park was withdrawn by Dublin City Council, a solidarity protest was organised by Irish Sport for Palestine and 1815 F.C.

MacGowan was of course a staunch Socialist Republican - he never shied away from vocalising that “I’ve always said that the Brits have no right to be there. I believe in a republic, a socialist republic.”

MacGowan was one of the most well known Irish musicians in the world. While having had a deserved reputation as a hellraiser, he will be remembered for his lyrical genius and song writing skills.

The occupation of Palestine is underpinned by that same system. The brutality of the Israeli state in their latest onslaught on Gaza has led to the deaths of tens of thousands of men, women and children and the displacement of almost TWO MILLION others.

The truth is that the Apartheid state of Israel is not a normal country - it is a terrorist state that will stop at nothing to ethnically cleanse every single man, women and child in Gaza in order to claim the land and its resources for itself.

As Irish Republicans, we oppose the continued occupation of the north-eastern part of our country. The centuries-long occupation of all, or part, of Ireland has been underpinned by a system of oppression, discrimination and brutality.
