A great episode that should be required listening for everyone.
How has the media contributed to manufacturing consent for COVID to be “over” (and the decline of public health in general)? New episode ft. @juliadoubleday.bsky.social and @wanderingkayli.bsky.social as well as some comments from former COVID-19 Technical Lead at the WHO, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove
In the editing room! 🎙️ Bad Press: how the media manufactures consent in the era of COVID. Public health is often in the news but it’s not always covered well. Power influences the narratives we hear from outlets and journalists. Coming soon w/ Julia Doubleday + Kayli Jamieson. Don’t miss it! 🩷💚💀

“I don’t want MY taxes supporting disabled people! Let them fend for themselves!”

Many can’t. They can’t work, they can’t get out of bed, they’re completely dependent on caregivers for survival.

Are you saying it’s ok to let them die? Rather than provide social supports?

“Long COVID has shattered every aspect of my life,” says Ella, who contracted COVID in 2021 at 19 and had to move home. Once active and social, she now spends days in a dark room with “debilitating fatigue,” exercise intolerance, brain fog, nerve pain, breathlessness and many other symptoms.

Are this many people genuinely unaware of the damage SARS-CoV2 continues to cause to human bodies and brains, or is it really just extreme denial?

A whole lot of people still can't figure out why students are struggling and absenteeism is so high. They seem oblivious to the fact that millions of kids have long COVID. Many are still talking about the brief stay at home period from 2020 as causal. Sometimes I just want to give up. It's COVID!
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

Wearing an n95 in public is the single most intersectional act of solidarity you can take.

Every group of people under attack by the fascists in charge is at higher risk of illness wrecking their body, finances, family, & future.

Don’t let fascists turn you into a weapon. Give/get mutual aid:

Disabled people need healthcare, housing, food and social supports.

This should not be controversial.

They shouldn’t have to have “thought ahead” and purchased disability insurance.

They shouldn’t have to beg, grovel and “prove their worth”.

They shouldn’t left to die.

We are not expendable

Exactly why mask mandates are necessary to quash airborne diseases like Covid, for which we do not have a sterilizing vaccine. And for measles, for which there is no longer herd immunity via vaccines. Masking & vaccinations in combination FTW 😷💉
The whole "you shouldn't be required to get vaccines because you might think they're not safe" thing is so weird to me. We know they're safe. If you harbor a deep fear that wearing a seatbelt is somehow dangerous, you still legally have to wear one when driving.

I hope nondisabled people are listening to disabled people as we’ve discussed the mass hemorrhaging of accessible jobs, layoffs over accommodations and spike of tools used to screen out disabled employees in the past few years (which ends survival possibilities for us)

HOLY SHIT. They found the genes for fibromyalgia - and it's *not* autoimmune, it's the central nervous system. It's very cool to see some progress made on the thing that's ruined my life since late teenage years!
Medical Republic: 'Fibromyalgia finally gets a genetic fingerprint'

'Additionally, certain risk loci overlapped with long covid (BPTF) and ME/CFS (OLFM4, RABGAP1L/GPR52), two poorly characterised disorders, albeit with different lead variants.'

USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins plans to make all SNAP recipients reapply and prove "that they literally are vulnerable and they can’t survive without it.”

The 'genuinely disabled'

The 'literally vulnerable'

They keep moving the goalposts.

They were never going to fund SNAP. It's eugenics:
Trump administration will require SNAP participants to reapply for benefits
Food aid recipients are already required to recertify their information regularly. But the move is part of USDA chief Brooke Rollins’ effort to overhaul the program.
