I thought about this a little more and wanted to amend my answer slightly!

I wanted to revisit this ask, because the more I think on it, the more I come to the same conclusion that led me to writing their dynamic the way it is. I don't think this is something that would ever happen because it's not something either of them wants. They are open to exploring things but I've made it really clear what their role preferences are and I'm someone who finds that to be really important. I know a lot of people say vers is preferred for any and all ships but in practice in the real world, there are a lot of people who do prefer to strictly top or bottom. And this isn't an invitation for discourse, so please don't argue with me on that if you feel otherwise. No one's experience is universal, and I'm speaking from my own perspective as a stone butch. Writing Alex as someone who prefers to bottom is so important to how I characterize him, because it's something that carries a stigma at times (though it shouldn't) and he is a character who is really struggling with what a man "should" or "shouldn't" be. But like with so many other things, like dancing and letting Mal lead, or wearing white at his wedding, it's another way of him bucking gender roles and being like oh yeah, we are just two people and there is no meaning to this act other than expressing our love. He's very eager about bottoming and about being submissive in many other ways even outside the bedroom, which I think suits the sweet and gentle person he is at his core, underneath all the insecurity and machismo! I think the better question about Mal's boundaries would be whether he would be willing to try and top using his actual body instead of toys, but I think even then the answer would still be no. He comes close with some acts, of course, but ultimately it's important he can still hold these boundaries about his body even as he grows more confident in using it.

I got an ask on tumblr about whether or not Mal would ever bottom for Alex, I thought I should share my answer here too!

Anonymous asked: Would Mal ever get comfortable enough where he would bottom for Alex? Or is that just totally outside his boundaries? I bounced this around a LOT when I was working out the early details of the fic/their relationship, actually! You have no idea how many nights/mornings I was laying in bed zoned out imagining how that would play out and if it felt right. I genuinely spent months trying to figure out what their dynamic was going to be like, and I actually have some scrapped drafts of their first time still saved where Mal is a lot more confident than how he ends up being in the final version (if anyone is interested I’m sure I can share them haha) Short answer: I don’t know, maybe? I think it’s possible. Long answer under the cut as it’ll be more explicit: So I do think eventually he might get to a point where he’d be comfortable trying it, but I think probably he might get overwhelmed just being fingered/prepped and I don’t think Alex would get all that pushy with him. So I think if they tried and he chickened out, it would have to be Mal that brought it up again, and I’m not sure if he would. But he might! I’ve been writing some of their married life sex dynamic now and Mal is a lot more confident than ever before. You’ll have seen a glimpse of that in CAA chapter 72 anyway but like, I’ve got a oneshot ready to go for decembalex where Mal is very very bold and I’m so excited to share it. The plot of that is that Alex wants to be tied up for his birthday, and while tied up, Mal feels more confident knowing that Alex can’t touch him, only the other way around, so he does stuff he otherwise wouldn’t do. In that fic I also make mention that they’ve done thigh fucking more than once, which I feel that + the face fucking implies Alex is eager to top now and then but he’s worried about Mal. I do think he prefers to bottom though, I think he just wants to try everything with him. On the note of Mal’s confidence, I’ve also written one sex scene for OCTS (which will admittedly appear late in the fic so I’m sure I’ll write others that occur before that) where Alex is being really fussy and Mal quite literally shuts him up with his (still mostly soft) dick. Actually, I never got as far as writing this, but my initial thoughts for the Alex’s birthday year 2 chapter was going to be that he tops Mal. But as I played it out in my head, it didn’t quite feel right. And then later I leaned more into Mal’s discomfort with his body and made him touch-averse, so I really had to throw it out by then. But again, over time he does get more confident so I think it’s a strong maybe. I just don’t know how it would play out in a way that makes sense for them, so I don’t think I’d write it unless something came to me out of nowhere. Though it’s worth mentioning that I outlined a whole ffxiv AU fic for them and I had planned on Alex being the top in their dynamic there. Something something moonkeeper miqo'te mating for life :’) idk if that’s in the lore or I made it up, I’m sure if some ffxiv nerd reads this they will tell me I’m wrong if I am but 😂 anyway Also feels worth mentioning that I have been sitting on a first time scene for Sam, Sebastian, and Abigail that I started writing a whole year and a half ago and similarly to Mal, Sebastian is aspec but he bottoms to both of them in that scene. But I also feel like the difference for them is that I write Seb as demi-aroace so he does now and then get aroused while I’ve made it something that doesn’t occur spontaneously for Mal ever. So I think the sensations that come with bottoming will be more enjoyable for Seb than they would for Mal. But, again, Mal’s enjoyment in sex largely comes from making Alex happy so even if he’s not getting anything out of bottoming I think if it’s something Alex truly wanted he’d try. I just think Alex would be scared to hurt him so that’s really where the hang up is for me in writing it out!

“Mm, wait,” Mallory managed to say, pressing on Alex's shoulder to signal him to stop, “I have to tell you something first, remember?” They both sat up, staring intently at one another. “Me too, actually,” Alex blurted out quickly. “Okay, well you go first then,” Mallory offered. “Um…” Alex hesitated, swallowing thickly and trying his best to maintain eye contact as he spoke. “I’m a virgin.” “Oh, well that’s okay,” Mallory sighed with relief, smiling and caressing Alex’s cheek gently. “I am too, I guess.” “You ‘guess’? What do you mean? Is that not what you were going to tell me too?” Alex looked confused, nearly asking more questions until Mallory placed his finger on his lips to hush him. “Let me explain.” Mallory steeled himself, taking a deep, shaking breath. Alex reached for his hands and squeezed them both firmly. “Whatever it is,” Alex reassured, his expression serious and eyebrows knitted with concern, “I’m still going to love you anyway.” “Alex…” Mallory said softly, unable to stop himself from smiling. The encouragement helped him push through his fears and finally say it. “I’m… asexual,” Mallory confessed. Alex looked perplexed. “… What’s A-sexual?” he asked, saying the word as if it were two separate words. Mallory laughed nervously. It was kind of cute that he didn’t know, but that was expected. Of course he wouldn’t know. “It means I don’t get turned on by anything,” Mallory explained matter-of-factly. “Oh,” Alex said, his expression dropping into something melancholy. “So… um, am I not—” “I find you attractive,” Mallory interrupted, “I find you very attractive, in fact. I wasn’t kidding all those times I called you handsome. I mean it.” “I don’t think I get it,” Alex admitted, his forehead wrinkling the way it always did when he was thinking. It would have been cute, if not for how worried Mallory still felt. “It means that…” Mallory struggled to find an easier way to explain it. Mallory grasped Alex’s hand, placing it over his own chest.
