In sum, the work must have been: Registered within 3 months of its first publication (in any format) OR before the titles were downloaded (because the Copyright Act provides statutory (court-set) damages only if one of the two is true); AND Registered within 5 years of first publication (because the Copyright Act provides a presumption of validity of all of the facts in the registration certificate, such as author and owner for works registered within 5 years). In other words: The work was registered within 3 months of publication, OR It was registered within 5 years of publication and before the download dates (from LibGen in June 2021 and PiLiMi in July 2022).

In issue 1 we meet human kid Ari, bored out of her mind on a long interstellar trip to her new home across the universe. When disaster strikes during a hunt for a midnight snack, she’s thrust together with alien kid Kit as they fight for survival!

Some recent pages from a pitch for a kids book on palaeontology, inspired by a visit I got to make to @stevebrusatte.bsky.social's lab a couple of years ago. This is a book I'd love to do - exploring the actual science that helps us understand how prehistoric animals lived.

Each kid takes part in the construction - lowering the skull on, adding a leg bone. Zuri uses a computer to reconstruct a simulation of the dinosaur. Riku uses his art skills to draw a visualisation.

Graphic Novel Builder is stuffed with advice and acitivies designed to get you making comics. There's no right or wrong in what you make, or how you do it, but if you're stuck or need a kickstart making something, I hope this book will help!

We see other teens imagining what their characters want: an amulet, money, a trophy. But Jay explains that we should dig deeper - why do they want these things? To end a terrible war, to save the family business, to help make friends… On the next page we see how a character’s desire can be linked to their personality, e.g. a lonely character wants to make friends, or a rebellious character wants to bring down an evil king. We’re encouraged then to think about our character’s personality and how that affects what they want. A spread from Graphic Novel Builder: The Illustrated Guide To Making Your Own Comics. We see a non-binary teen with yellow hat and Charlie Brown style zig-zag jumper describe different types of genre, each of which is visualised with a humorous panel. That's when I had the idea to structure the book around a bunch of teens teaching EACH OTHER how to make comics. That's how a lot of us started out, right? Just making something and seeing how it turned out. I've got such fond memories of being a creative kid, and I wanted to capture that spirit.

It's a book I'm really proud of. It was pretty scary to take on, when the publisher reached out with the idea. Who am I to tell people how to make comics?!

But then I realised that was the point... anyone can make comics, and there's no right way to do it. The trick is to GET STARTED.

Just finished Alien Clay by @aptshadow.bsky.social - a stunning standalone sci-fi so perfectly suited to our times. Where Children of Time explored empathy for non-human life, Alien Clay uses alien life as a backdrop for exploring class consciousness, Marxism and revolutionary unity. So good.

That's me done for the year. This year I wrote, drew and coloured about 190 pages of comics, including a graphic novel, one and a half science comics, a pitch and some other bits and bobs.
