All about The Edinburgh Festival Fringe. During August, we signal boost shows, and the rest of the year we talk about new & old acts. Also West End, Broadway, Fringe Theatre and Comedy. 100% unofficial.
Flyers for "Singin' I'm No a Billie, She's a Tim" stuck into windscreen wipers and also plastered over other performers poster. Unacceptable, the @edfringe.bsky.social has rules for flyers and promotion.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe started in 1947 as a response to the Edinburgh International Festival. It wasn't until 1974 that the Fringe got bigger.

These days the EIF is soundly outnumbered and the ability to see both Bertolt Brechta and then Basil Brush in one day is rather the point.

One of the many, many artists who had their careers started by @edfringe.bsky.social is Tony Award winning Anna Quayle, who first appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Better Late back in 1956.

Quayle is remembered for Casino Royale (in green paint), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Grange Hill.

No one is moving the historic, world famous international arts showcase known as The Edinburgh Fringe just because it's a bit of a bother to travel up to Scotland from London.

Though do recall that The Camden Fringe is a thing ( @camdenfringe.bsky.social ).

I Am Star Trek came to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2001. (It debuted at Wisconsin's Broom Street Theatre in 1995). A biography of sorts, it focused on the life of #StarTrek creator Gene Rodenberry, and featured nine actors playing over 50 characters.

Advert from the 1984 Edinburgh Festival Fringe Programme for Radio Forth, which at the time, ran a split service so it could run Festival City Radio, specifically for the Festival.

Not even sure how you'd do such a thing today.

Radio Forth is still around, though it's now part of Bauer Media.

Just a reminder that petting the nose of Greyfriar's Bobby isn't 'good luck'. The wee dog spent most of it's existence in mourning. Don't go out of your way to hurt the poor thing's monument.

Curses aren't real, but damaging the statue of the embodiment of grief sounds like a way to get cursed.

Teviot Row House is the world's oldest purpose built student union building (est: 1889). Formerly the site of 'The Fringe Club', it became a Gilded Balloon venue in 2001.

It was closed this year for repairs and modernisation. It's looking like it'll be closed in 2025 as repairs continue.

1984 Edinburgh Fringe advert for Alexi Sayle, who would have been 32 at the time and at the height of popularity. The pioneer of alternative comedy would have been well known thanks to TV shows like The Young Ones. The following year he'd appear on Doctor Who as a Disc Jockey on the planet Necros.
